"The Missing Link to Reducing Workers' Comp Costs" Part 2

In the second of a series, Fred Miller, a former insurance agent who now works for the Montana Dept. of Labor & Industry, writes about the direct link between safer workplaces and lower workers' comp rates.

What was he thinking?

The middle-aged mechanic had tried to lift a 225-pound axle a few inches off the ground to scoot it closer to the passenger car needing a new transmission.

However, the physics of leverage kicked in and multiplied the axle weight by a factor of six. So the 225-pound axle felt like 1,350 lbs on his back.

His back couldn't handle the weight. He ended up out of work for months with a critical injury that will trouble him for years. And the injury cost thousands in increased worker's comp premium.

The worst of it is this: the injury could have been prevented if the company's prevailing safety attitude was other than: "Accidents just happen. Can't do anything about it."

Any number of things could have been done differently to avoid that incident: the worker could have asked another employee to help lift; could have used or a mechanical lift; or could have placed a dolly on which to roll the axle. If this business had a "safety is job #1 attitude," the injury could have been prevented. If the business had been using the basic principles of risk management, and had shared those principles in its workplace, the injury need not have happened.

That's because there is a direct correlation between utilizing risk management and creating a safer, cleaner, more productive workplace. Insurance companies know this. That's why they employ loss prevention (or risk management) professionals who work with customers to create safer workplaces.

Most large businesses know this, because the economics of safety are magnified the larger your business becomes. The theory of risk management is simple: indentify the workplace hazards likely to cause illness or injury. Then take measures to reduce them, control them or eliminate them. The first step is toughest: deciding to take action to make a safer working environment.

Safety should be managed like any other organization function, with managers setting goals, then planning, organizing, leading others to achieve them.

The Montana Safety & Health Bureau (at the Dept. of Labor) exists to help all businesses create a safety culture in their workplace. Other resources would also be your workers' comp insurance company's loss prevention department, or your local insurance agency.

The point is well taken: most all workplace injuries can be prevented if people stop and think about what they are about to do.

The sign posted on white paper throughout a Lewistown business says it well:

-) Safety is Job #1.

-) Quality is Job #2.

-) Production is Job #3.

The business owner knows that if he makes safety Job #1, quality and production will follow. Another way of looking at it: Safety is simply doing the job right, the first time. U.S. hiker freed by Iran wants Nicaragua to let jailed American go

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Activists including an American hiker who had been jailed in Iran delivered petitions with more than 100,000 signatures to a Nicaraguan consulate in Los Angeles on Wednesday demanding freedom for a U.S. citizen they say is unjustly imprisoned in the Central American country.

Jason Puracal, 35, was found guilty of drug trafficking and money laundering by a Nicaraguan trial judge exactly one year ago on August 29, after being detained in 2010. He was sentenced to a 22-year term and has been in solitary confinement and on suicide watch, his supporters told Reuters last month.

Puracal has become a cause c?l?bre for U.S. and international human rights activists, with U.S. lawmakers appealing to Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega for his freedom.

Sarah Shourd, an American who was imprisoned in Iran after being arrested in 2009 while hiking near the Iraq border, was among those who delivered the petitions in the latest show of support for Puracal's case.

A Nicaraguan appeals court heard his case earlier this month, and a decision could come anytime.

Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were arrested by Iranian border guards who said they had crossed into Iran from Iraq.

She said she feels "the pain and anxiety his family (is) going through because my fianc?, my husband now, and my friend Josh were imprisoned for a year after I was released."

Shourd had been held for 14 months and was released on humanitarian grounds after a $500,000 bail was paid, but Bauer and Fattal were convicted of illegal entry and espionage. They were freed last year after Oman paid bail of $1 million.

The U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said in May that Puracal was arbitrarily imprisoned and recommended he be freed.

The director of the California Innocence Project, which normally focuses on wrongfully convicted inmates in that state's prison system, helped deliver petitions on Wednesday.

Puracal's other backers include a human rights lawyer who previously worked on behalf of former Czech President Vaclav Havel and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar.

A U.S. citizen born in Washington state, Puracal served in Nicaragua as a Peace Corps volunteer in 2002, and he has married a Nicaraguan woman with whom he has a son.

Before his arrest, he worked in real estate in the city of San Juan del Sur, a Pacific Coast surfing destination. His supporters said he came under suspicion because his job gave him control over large sums of money held for property transactions.

Ten Nicaraguan co-defendants were also found guilty despite their testimony that they had never met or worked with Puracal, his legal team said.

Consular officials could not be reached for comment.

Spacewalking astronauts stymied by sticky bolts

(AP) ? Sticky bolts proved too much for spacewalking astronauts Thursday, forcing them to leave a new power-switching box dangling from the International Space Station instead of firmly bolted down.

NASA scrambled to reduce the power demands of the orbiting lab and balance the electrical load, while mapping out a plan that could have the astronauts going back out as early as next week to tackle the problem.

It was a major disappointment for NASA's Sunita Williams and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide, who spent hours struggling with the bolts. They used all sorts of tools and tactics as the spacewalk went into overtime, but nothing worked.

With time running out, Mission Control finally told them to tie down the box and head inside.

"We'll figure this out another day," Mission Control radioed.

Thursday's spacewalk was supposed to last 6? hours but stretched past eight hours. It ended up in NASA's top 10 list for longest spacewalks ? at the No. 3 spot.

The power router is one of four, and NASA stressed that the other three are working fine. Nonetheless, electrical usage will need to be closely monitored at the 260-mile-high lab given Thursday's failed effort.

"The team may have to manage power loads a little bit, but this is familiar territory," said NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini. "We'll be able to deal with that while we decide what our next plan is."

While the space station remains in stable condition, NASA would like to take another crack at securing the box as soon as possible ? perhaps next week ? because of the mid-September departure of half the six-member crew, including the second U.S. astronaut, who ran the robot arm Thursday from inside the station. And the longer this situation goes on, the more vulnerable the space station is to additional failures, Suffredini noted.

Until the problem is resolved, the space station is able to draw power from just three-quarters of its solar wings ? six instead of all eight.

The old switch box started acting up last fall, and NASA decided to replace it before it failed. This was the first spacewalk by Americans since the final shuttle flight a year ago.

Williams and Hoshide had trouble getting the old unit out because of two sticky bolts, and they found metal shavings in the sockets. They squirted in compressed nitrogen gas to clear the holes, and some debris came out. But still, the main bolt would not go in properly; the companion bolt was left undone.

The frustration mounted as the minutes and hours ticked by. At one point, Mission Control radioed, "We've tried almost every backup we have on this stupid bolt."

At a news conference later in the day, NASA officials said possible solutions might involve lubricating the thick, sturdy bolts or applying more torque.

Putting in a new switching box was the No. 1 priority of the spacewalk. In separate work, the astronauts managed to hook up one power cable and get another cable halfway connected. They never got around to replacing a bad camera on the space station's big robotic arm.

Mission Control did its best to cheer up the spacewalkers as they re-entered the space station. "You guys are rock stars, just so you know," Mission Control said.

It was the second spacewalk in less than two weeks. On Aug. 20, two Russians worked outside the orbiting complex, installing shields to protect against micrometeorite strikes.

It's no longer common for astronauts to step into the vacuum of space. That's because after almost 14 years, the space station is virtually complete. Plus NASA's shuttles are retired and now museum pieces.

Williams is the lone woman at the space station. She and Hoshide arrived a month ago, launching from Kazakhstan aboard a Russian rocket.

Voters on Christie's sddress: Likable, honest but lacking Romney focus

Yahoo! News asked voters to share their reactions to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's keynote address at the Republican National Convention. In their own words, here are perspectives from voters across the nation.

***

I like Chris Christie. I have always had an affinity for him--despite that I am a Libertarian at heart. Christie's brand of tell-it-like-it-is forthrightness and amicable openness appeals to me. His keynote speech at the RNC was no exception. It did for me what none of Mitt Romney's speeches has done thus far.

Whether Christie is sharing anecdotes from his youth or boasting of his bipartisan accomplishments, he manages to make a real connection with the people; I feel like I know and understand him better than I do Romney after months of Romney exposure in primary debates and speeches.

It was refreshing because many Americans are, as Christie himself put it, tired of being "coddled." We are ready to hear the truth, even if it isn't all blue skies ahead.

-- Kathleen Ann

***

Chris Christie is known for calling things as he sees them.

The New Jersey governor's honest answers are what many Republicans love about him. His words hold weight because he speaks openly and doesn't beat around the bush or dodge questions.

However, as the keynote speaker at the RNC, I feel he should have addressed more of Mitt Romney's accomplishments rather than those of his own. He briefly touched on several issues that weigh heavy on the hearts of Americans, such as the deficit, a government that is too big and a failing education system--but related those issues to what he did as the governor of New Jersey. He failed to relate the issues to Mitt Romney's record.

-- Sarah Guiza

***

Direct and plain spoken, Gov. Chris Christie is not a boring speaker, anymore than he is a man of small physical stature.

Christie called for sacrifice from all Americans: "Our problems are big, and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice, and any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth."

He invoked the Greatest Generation, and said that it was our turn to answer history's call, or our children would only read about American exceptionalism, not actually live it.

It was a powerfully delivered speech. I have been leaning toward Romney, based on our lethargic economy. With Christie's powerful speech, where he personally vouched for Romney, I continue to lean toward the Romney ticket.

-- Skip Griffin

***

From listening to Gov. Chris Christie's speech Tuesday night, it seemed at first to be more about him than Mitt Romney. He talked about his background and his accomplishments, which made me think that it was a more of a "if Romney loses this year, think of me in 2016" speech than a real keynote address. Then, as the speech wore on, he hit the usual Republican talking points of smaller government, cutting spending and reducing the deficit and debt, and, as usual, the details were lacking. Maybe we'll hear them in Romney's speech on Thursday night?

In all, it was a good stump speech, but not what I have come to expect for a keynote address. Another thing that bothered me was massive amounts of "truth" in the speech. When someone keeps telling you he is telling you the truth, it makes you wonder whether he actually is.

-- John Hill

***

Tuesday night, love him or hate him, Chris Christie deserves a little respect for his speech at the 2012 RNC convention. He relayed to the crowd his upbringing with a tough Sicilian mother and an Irish father. As Christie put it, "In the automobile of life, dad was the passenger." To me, it felt like the entire speech carried that family feeling. Christie hammered home: We need to unite and not divide.

I am no more, or less, likely to vote for Mitt Romney because of Christie's speech. Frankly, he barely mentioned Romney. Mitt was an afterthought. I am, however, more likely to vote for Christie when and if he decides to run for president.

-- Tim Bryant

***

Christie's presentation, as always, had a strong edge to it. I love his strength, energy, principles and vision for the country and his state. Christie, unlike Romney, insists on respect and integrity more than political love.

It is too early to say whether Romney will do the right things or not with Democrats for the country, if elected. Christie talked more about his achievements in New Jersey instead of what Romney will do for the country, as the other governors did on Tuesday. This included balancing his budget without tax increases. I remain undecided between Romney and Johnson. Romney has failed to tell me how he will balance the budget like Christie did.

-- William H. Sloan

***

I was very touched by his opening remarks as he recounted his upbringing and the struggles that his parents overcame. It was not lost on me that Christie's dad worked during the day and went to school at night, earning his college degree. As someone who followed the same path, I know how hard it is to balance a full-time job and education.

The governor chose a number of slogans that actually spoke to me. I was moved when he said that that "real leaders don't follow polls, real leaders change polls"--a clear indication that politicians need to do what is right and not necessarily popular.

-- Morris Armstrong

***

As a supporter of the GOP and Mitt Romney, I eagerly awaited the keynote speech at the RNC in Tampa by Chris Christie setting the tone for the convention.

I believe Christie nailed the theme of the convention--mostly. As Christie commanded the stage, it was obvious the continued Republican platform will be based on the ideas of "sacrifice" and "truth," key themes of Christie's speech. Both resonated with me.

I am left wondering how much Chris Christie is fully convinced Mitt Romney is the man to lead the country. Christie did plenty to cover the party platform and many of his own accomplishments, but it took him almost 20 minutes to mention Mitt Romney by name.

It seemed somewhat odd he choose that path.

Sheen's 'Anger Management' gets 90 more eps

Frank Ockenfels / FX

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Guess Charlie Sheen won't be retiring any time soon. FX Networks announced on Wednesday that it has ordered 90 more episodes of the actor's sitcom "Anger Management."?

The original deal between FX and producer Lionsgate stated that if the show met ratings expectations during its first eight episodes, it would trigger an automatic order for the additional episodes. According to FX, the show averages 4.53 million viewers.

"We set a very high ratings bar?that included some additional hurdles for 'Anger Management' to earn its back-90 order and the series met and exceed those metrics," said Chuck Saftler, the executive vice president of FX. "Charlie Sheen and the entire cast did an amazing job in the first 10 episodes, which were produced in a very tight window. I have no doubt that the producers and cast will be able to pull off the Herculean task of producing 90 episodes over the next two years."

Sheen said prior to "Anger Managment's" premiere that he'd retire after the show shuts down. "When this ends, I'm done. This is my swan song," he told The New York Times.

But with this latest announcement, he and his co-stars -- Selma Blair, Shawnee Smith and Daniela Bobadilla among them -- will be employed for at least another two years.?

Production on the show begins again on Sept. 24, and new episodes will air in January.

Publishers Start Signing Up For PostRelease?s Content Marketing Network

postrelease logo"Content marketing" is a phrase I hear more and more these days, as brands increasingly create their videos, blog posts, and other forms of content to promote themselves, rather than just relying on traditional advertising. Now a startup called PostRelease has built what is, essentially, an ad network for content marketing, so that advertisers can ensure that their content gets distribution, while publishers can make some revenue. CEO Justin Choi says that publishers just add a few lines of code to their site (or installing the PostRelease plugin for WordPress and vBulletin) and create a template for sponsored posts, then the sponsored content starts running automatically. He argues that PostRelease should be more appealing to publishers than a service like Outbrain, because it isn't linking people to content on other sites, so they aren't necessarily driving readers elsewhere. Right now, for blogs, the sponsored posts always appear as the second post from the top, though Choi says the placements may become more customizable over time.

ILYA MECHNIKOV ? Father of Probiotics or ... - Critical Care 2011

Beneficial Helpful Bacteria or Healthy Bacteria or Friendly Bacteria or Probiotic Bacteria or Probiotic or Probiotics or Oral probiotics or Dental probiotics are live microorganisms viewed as beneficial, helpful, and friendly towards the host organism.

In accordance with the currently adopted definition by FAO/WHO probiotics are: ?Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host?.

Probiotic Bacteria can line tooth and also the mucous membranes in the gum and the mouth (Oral probiotics), preventing or reducing tooth infection, abscess in gum and mouth abscess produced by harmful? bacteria, viruses and fungi.

The word ?probiotics? is apparently a composite in the Latin preposition pro (?for?) and also the Greek adjective biotic, the latter deriving from the noun bios, ?life?).

It was initially introduced in 1953 by Werner Kollath. Contrasting antibiotics, probiotics were defined as microbial derived factors that stimulate the development of other microorganisms.

In 1989 Roy Fuller suggested a definition of probiotics which was traditionally used: ?A live microbial feed supplement which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance?.

Fuller?s definition emphasizes the requirement of viability for probiotics and introduces the aspect of a beneficial influence on the host.

L. acidophilus was basically discovered in the late 1800s by a gastroenterologist Ismar Isidor Boas.

This beneficial helpful bacteria received its name from the Latin lacto, which suggests milk bacillus, which means rod shaped and acidophilus, which suggests acid loving.

Lactobacillus acidophilus are certainly the familiar probiotic, or ?friendly? bacteria, to most of us, and they are probably the most-studied currently.

They can be found in the human stomach, mouth, vagina and colon.

The key good thing about L. acidophilus is the capacity to inhibit the development of pathogenic microorganisms, not just in the gut, but additionally through the entire body.

L. acidophilus significantly control and rid the body of Candida albicans overgrowth.

In addition they inhibit Escherichia coli, which may be fatal in big enough populations. They are able to also inhibit the expansion of Helicobacter pylori ? implicated in stomach and small intestine ulcers.

If to look for brands which contain added bacteria, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, if you notice that cultured cottage cheese tastes tarter than cottage type cheese made out of acid or digested enzymes.

That is because the bacteria have consumed some of the milk?s natural sugar.

Oral probiotics could be utilized to prevent dental infection from entering the mouth?s internal tissues.

Oral Probiotic Bacteria can provide viable preventive steps for cavities, periodontal disease and those other infections that can derive from microorganism invasions.

Oral Beneficial Helpful Bacteria supplementation? (lozenges, chewing gum, chewable tablets, capsules, probiotic foods) diminishes the amount of pathogenic bacteria while also reduces the potential risk of periodontal disease and dental caries.

Oral probiotics colonies can stimulate our disease fighting capability rolling around in its healing and detoxification process.

Based on research begun over 30 years ago by Dentist Jeffrey D. Hillman, ProBiora3 represents a brand new aim of probiotics that support overall dental health.

ProBiora3? is a patented combination of three of beneficial bacteria naturally seen in healthy mouths, including Streptococcus oralis KJ3, Streptococcus uberis KJ2, and Streptococcus rattus JH145. This mix of probiotics supports fresher breath, whiter teeth and sustains gum and tooth health.

This is the beneficial helpful bacteria or Oral Probiotic that fights bacteria that can cause?sore throats, colds, flu and ear infections and smelly breath.

BLIS K12 is certainly a safe yet powerful strain of the Healthy Bacteria called Streptococcus salivarius which normally happens in the throat and mouth.

BLIS K12 may also trap and inactivate viruses coming in externally, by promoting interferon production by the body processes. ?

The first observation of the positive role played by certain bacteria was first created by Russian scientist and Nobel laureate ILYA MECHNIKOV, who at first from the twentieth century suggested that it would be possible to modify the gut flora also to replace harmful microbes with useful microbes.

Mechnikov produced the notion that the aging process is a result of the activity of putrefactive (proteolytic) microbes producing toxic substances inside the large bowel.

Based on Mechnikov these compounds were to blame for what he called ?intestinal auto-intoxication?, which caused the physical changes associated with old age.

Mechnikov had also observed that one rural populations in Europe, for example in Bulgaria as well as the Russian steppes who lived largely on milk fermented by lactic-acid bacteria were exceptionally long lived.

Based on this information, Mechnikov proposed that use of fermented milk would ?seed? the intestine and decrease the intestinal pH understanding that this may suppress the growth of proteolytic bacteria. Which is why Mechnikov is known as the ?Father of Probiotics?.

Mechnikov himself introduced in the diet sour milk fermented while using bacteria he called ?Bulgarian Bacillus? determined his health benefited. Friends in Paris quickly followed his example and physicians began prescribing the sour milk diet for his or her patients.

Being Open to Life: Motherhood & Making a House a Home

Sitting here at my perch in front of the kitchen table,
a hot cup of freshly French-pressed coffee,?

a banana-chocolate-chip breakfast cookie to nibble on (c/o Bethenny Frankel and her genius recipes)...

my house is fresh, clean and sparkling and I swear I can feel it in my soul. Its like I was under the spout where the glory comes out. New. Woman.

I've been absent the past few days from the internet because I have been scouring my little abode up and down. I had a little come-to-Jesus over housekeeping last week.

Now, first of all, let me explain: I have always been rather domestic.

Before I got married, I was supremely happy with my part-time job of being a frequent babysitter/nanny to a large family of young children. I made more than enough money for my college-student expenses, and felt so much satisfaction in this job of chasing after rambunctious, lovable children,
?I never felt the need to wait tables or bartend or do any of the other "normal" and more fast-paced jobs most of my peers opted for.

Oh yeah, in the summers I lifeguarded, but lets be real, that job is such a joke. I was a poser.

So when I found out I was pregnant a few weeks after my wedding, it was a matter of fact that I'd be staying home with my future baby.

I love being with babies, after all, and I do believe that children thrive with a certain calm, peaceful continuity of care in their daily lives. And I definitely can't afford a good nanny.?

Had I had time before learning I was pregnant to pursue a real career?- you know, at least partially related to my major? as in politics or law or teaching - the decision would undoubtedly have been much more complicated.?
I still haven't ruled out someday having a career, at least a part-time one, or going back to school. But that's a long way off from right now.

Last year, I was treading water keeping after all the meals in the house (grocery shopping and cooking), all of the cleaning and all of the daily care of my baby. And just getting to know him!?
When people asked if I stayed at home, I'd breathe, "Ohhhh yes". I genuinely had no idea how women balance even part-time work with a small baby, and still stay happily married! I think Jason and I would have ended up in huge fights all the time over whose turn it was to do what had we both been working out of the house. Though I am sure that if that's what you're called to, both spouses are given enough grace to avoid that situation! :)

But lately, I've caught myself not feeling as confident as before about my stay-at-home status. We are in a weird transition stage once again... Mr Baby is still too young to start pre-school stuff,?but at the same time, he's getting a little more big and independent with each passing day, and I have more energy thanks to 8 hour nights of uninterrupted sleep, which I suppose has left me feeling somewhat restless.

It was sneaky though - I just noticed that when people ask if I'm working or staying at home, I found myself (unnecessarily) giving a little monologue as to why I am unable to find a job that pays enough to bring in any real profit outside of the cost of a good daycare program, and then what's the point! Blah blah blah...

Why am I defending this? I'd wonder, hearing myself hastily explaining these personal, irrelevant details to others. This is the 21st century! There is no longer a "rule" for all mothers to follow - whether that's "Everyone must be a good feminist and have a real?job" or "Shame on you for not staying home with your babies!"... I know this, so why the subconscious insecurity?

Catching this defensive attitude in my formerly-content-self spurred a little soul-searching. Am I doing my job right? I wondered. Is one toddler and a small house enough to make up a full-time job?

I even sent my poor little resume out a few places. Most times it was ignored or politely declined, but the few openings that I seemed to qualify for gave me cold feet. I am simply not ready to drop my child off at daycare. Not for an entry-level job that pays hourly.

I forgot too, that Jason has been off school the past few weeks... a welcome break that sadly ends this coming Tuesday. I have only connected with a handful of other moms whose husband's are in MBA programs... but it has been so encouraging to feel someone else is understanding of the huge toll that takes on the whole family. It really doesn't matter if you have 1 or 3 kids... having a spouse taking evening classes is like taking another job.?

I have earnestly sought the grace to be patient and loving... and generous... with the absence of my usually-dedicated-and-dependable husband. Exam week was the hardest, above all... I barely saw him for 2 straight weeks.?

Given the amount of Jason's absence, whether he's at the library studying or in class, or working late (which is not infrequent), ?were I working outside of the home during Jason's school semesters, our happy, confident, well-adjusted 18 month old would barely see either of his parents.

So far, I haven't snapped or been sarcastic or sour about the time my husband has to take away from home. I've even pushed him to take extra time away to workout or meet friends from school at a pub, cause I know he needs to blow off steam and healthily release stress.

But in the meantime... I worry about the load he carries with his school and the MBA, and I wonder, is my job a full-time job? Or am I not doing it right?

Turns out, I kind of wasn't. I had gotten used to treating the house the way you have to when you have a breastfeeding infant... You know, you keep after the bare essentials of clean sheets and underwear, hot meals and swept floors... But you learn you can't sweat the small stuff when your energy level is not dependable. The socks go missing in the bottom of the laundry basket for weeks on end during a month of teething... The bathrooms are unattended to unless they start to look dingily like they need a scrub-down... Some nights dishes hang out "soaking" in the sink until you can get to them in the morning... And the cabinets sit forlornly in utter disarray. Don't even bring up the closets.

I would have the odd day once a week or once every other week, where I had the unexpected energy needed to scour everything from top to bottom... But there have been plenty of days and nights that a somewhat tidy home had to be good enough.

I was brought up in a big family.
I was taught how to cook very well, and I had several chores that I completed regularly with competence. (Every Saturday, without fail, I had to clean out the refrigerator). But, being brought up in modern America, I, like most young adults my age, was not taught the rhythm and regular routine of true housekeeping.

?If I could describe my housekeeping in one word it would be:?reactionary.?

And then I discovered this incredible book.?

Home Comforts: The Art & Science of Keeping House, by Cheryl Mendelson, does what my modern upbringing did not... teach me how to manage my little domain with the precision and thorough care that one would manage a small business.?
"Those who lacked grandmothers or mothers who wanted them to learn about housekeeping usually never did learn anything about it and continue to regard it as alien territory. As adults who want good, well-run homes, they may succeed in mastering some practical skills, although a surprising number do not. Far more, however, find themselves quite conflicted about attempting domesticity. Their thinking is: I may do this dusting or laundry, but this is not really me.
Unfortunately, what a traditional woman did that made her home warm and alive was not dusting and laundry... Her real secret was that she identified herself with her home. Of course, this did not always turn out well. A controlling woman might make her home suffocating. A perfectionist's home might be chilly and forbidding. But it is more illuminating to think about what happened when things went right.

Then her affection was in the soft sofa cushions, clean linens, and good meals;?
her memory in well-stocked storeroom cabinets and the pantry;?her intelligence in the order and healthfulness of her home; her good humor in its light and air.

She lived her life not only through her own body but through the house as an extension of her body; part of her relation to those she loved was embodied in the physical medium, of the home she made."?

- Home Comforts, p. 8-10.

[Just in case you were wondering, this author, far from being an oppressed pre-feminist, was a full-time lawyer who still wistfully longed for the domesticity she learned from her Italian and Irish grandmothers on their working farms. She finally found a way to embrace both. Her book is not just for SAHM's... she gives tips and suggestions for every homemaker's situation - whether working, at home, parenting, married or single. It is truly updated and flexible enough to be the modern domestic's bible.]

[just fyi this pic is from last night - lest anyone think I drink red wine before 5 pm]

DID YOU KNOW that you're not really supposed to make the bed right away in the morning? For crispy, fresh sheets, you need to leave the bed turned down to air out for at least 1 hour in the morning, before making it up.?

And dusting is not something extra you should do occasionally. I am embarrassed about this, but I honestly had no idea it is supposed to be done at least several times a week for the greatest health and comfort in the home to prevent allergies... And that includes little things like lampshades and air-conditioning filters!

My housekeeping up to this point was, if things looked dusty, I dusted them. If we were out of clean clothes, I washed them. Once in a blue moon I'd take off the sofa-cushion upholstery and put it through the wash... but I certainly did not have a system or rhythm for such tasks.?

Since we have an inside-dog that sheds a good bit, ?plus a crawling/rolling/playful toddler, I have been very regular about the floors. But again, I didn't have a specific routine with them.

The past few days of implementing a rigorous routine and a higher standard of excellence and orderliness within my home has been unbelievably satisfying. Exhaustingly hard work, and I feel a bit achey when crawling into my *fresh n' clean* bed at night, but I am so proud of myself.

But I've come to realize something, over the past few days of therapy in cleaning.?

Raising a child is a full-time job, no matter how you slice it.?

Even without keeping a pristine home. You don't have to add anything to "make" raising a child a full-time job.?Either you or your spouse embrace the full-time requirements of this job,

or you hire someone else to do it full or part-time while you work at something else.?

But someone has to do it. The existence of well-paid nannies is proof enough that everyone knows it is?a *real* job.?It is hardly a black-and-white decision to make - whether you do this job 24/7, or whether you pay someone else to do it for some of that time.?

And it does not make you any less of a mother if you have a great career that is fulfilling and exciting in its own right,?

just as it does not make you any more of a mother if you stay home and absent-mindedly neglect your baby.?

It has to be a decision you come to willingly and freely, or else it is just not fruitful. I?am so grateful for the opportunity to stay home with my baby.?

Some days it is a sacrifice. Some days I feel like I should do something more to refresh my mind after too many Eric Carle books. Or something makes me feel intelligent and up to date with the rest of society. Being a Stay at Home Mom, I worry sometimes that my children will take advantage of me as they grow older, because I was always available.?

Somedays you feel underappreciated, overwhelmed and burnt-out. Other days, you feel as if you need to take on something more - which has led me to amping up the housekeeping, freelance writing in places like this?and that, and distance running.

If I were working, I know I'd feel guilty and anxious about missing this short season of huge milestones with my child.?

Motherhood is a job that comes riddled with anxiety, no matter how you approach it. There is no perfect way to do it, just as there is no perfect mother out there.?

But for me, for now, I am excited about learning how to be a very competent housewife in addition to being "just" a mother. And in my clean, cozy, dust-free home, getting to hear every "vrooom" and "beep beep" from Will's corner of plastic trucks,

I feel as content as it gets.

Danny Lipford: This week on Today?s Homeowner we?re getting ready for summer. More precisely, we?re looking at what we need to do to get our homes ready for summer. If you?re looking at warmer weather, you sure need to be looking at this.

As we move further into spring many of us start thinking ahead to summer time. You know, vacations at the beach. Or maybe those lazy Saturdays by the pool or the lake. But it?s also the time of the year where we face a lot of challenges as homeowners. And have to deal with all the stuff that mother nature dishes out. So, that?s what we?re doing this week. Think of it as a summer survival guide for your home. We?re going to give you some great tips on how your home can survive all the extreme temperatures as well as making your family a little more comfortable in and around your home.

Hey, think about it. This is the time of the year where we get the most punishment from the sun. And in some areas of the country the weather can really be severe. In my part of the world the sever summer weather we?re most concerned about is hurricanes and tropical storms. We?ve all seen the damage from big storms like Katrina, but even a small storm can make life miserable. The good news is that you usually get plenty of notice that they?re headed your way. So you can prepare by doing things like boarding up windows. Of course some people are still scurrying to buy supplies right at the last minute.

Now, whether you face hurricanes, tornados, or strong thunder storms there are a few things you can do to always be prepared. Keep your insurance policy information and contact numbers in an accessible place. And keep at least one cell phone fully charged at all times. A list with other emergency numbers and a first aid kit are also a good idea. Power outages are a given in these situations. So have plenty of batteries and non-perishable foods on hand to tide you over until power is restored. If you expect to use a portable generator be sure you know how to use it safely. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the greatest danger in these situations, so operate it outside away from the house.

One thing we all have in common during this time of the year is the heat. And that can mean different things depending on where you live in the country. If you live in an area of the country that has a lot of humidity that means all the building materials on the outside of your home are going to expand a little bit, creating cracks. The same can happen if you?re in a very dry, arid part of the country with that type of shrinkage around the outside of your home you?re still going to have cracks.

Perfect time to walk around your home with a very good quality flexible caulk, fill in all of those cracks. That way the expansion and contraction that?ll happen in the months and years ahead, no problem, it?ll hang right in there with it.

The same goes for any type of paint that you may be using. And I would suggest using a high-quality, acrylic latex paint. So that you have that elasticity so that?ll expand and contract throughout the year.

Now, heat can make you very uncomfortable. There are a few things that you can do to make life a little easier. One of the easiest ways to cool off this time of the year is the addition of a ceiling fan to a room. Even if you have air conditioning the constant moving air generated by a ceiling fan will make it feel cooler than it actually is. And adding one to an outside living area can make all the difference in how comfortable that space might be. The key thing to remember is that in warm weather you want that fan turning counter-clockwise as you look up at it from the ground.

Adding an exhaust fan to your attic is another great way to stay cool, because it pushes out the hot air at the top of your attic, drawing in cooler air from the socket or overhang areas. If you choose one that?s powered by its own solar cells you can see all these benefits without adding one cent to your utility bill.

To minimize heat gain in your home from exposure to the sun there?s several things that you can do. The easiest is simply draw the blinds to stop some solar heat gain, or add window film to the inside surface of single-pane windows to do the same thing without obstructing the view. The ideal solution though is to install windows with a Low-E coating. This coating filters the sunlight, letting in visible light while it blocks UV rays. So, you not only keep the inside cooler, you protect your furnishings from fading as well.

If your house has air conditioning, and it?s pretty much a necessity here in the South, you?ll want to show it just a little bit of love before you start relying on it this summer. Now, they tell us to have a check-up every year at the doctor, well, the same thing is true for your air conditioning system. You need to have a professional heating and cooling contractor come out to your house. And for a nominal fee they?ll check your refrigerant levels and do some internal cleaning to ensure that it?s working as efficient as it should. And it will also ensure that it?ll last as long as it should.

Now, there?s a couple things that you can do yourself. First of all, make sure you change that filter on a regular basis. And use a good quality filter. It?ll help your indoor air quality as well as, again, make your system work as efficiently as it should. The second thing is make sure you keep all of the landscaping cleared away from your air conditioning compressor unit outside so that it has a little room to breathe.

Hey, speaking of that, my buddy Joe has a great Simple Solution for you that?s readymade if you?re getting your house ready for summer.

Joe Truini: There aren?t many repairs a homeowner can make to a central air conditioning system, but here is one. When the compressor gets damaged on the outside the metal fins get crushed like this. It?s important to straighten them out. And here?s one way, with a stiff bristle plastic brush. This one?s made for cleaning tile and grout.

What you need to do is just run the brush up and down the fins using quite a bit of pressure. You?d be surprised you need quite a bit of pressure to straighten these out. Even though they?re only aluminum. And this is important because we want air to go completely through these. There we go. That?s better already, after just a few minutes. It takes three or four minutes to get them all the way straightened out.

Now, it?s never going to be perfect. But you can straighten them out so that at least it?s operating pretty efficiently. Now, if you find any fins that are completely crushed you can very carefully straighten them out with a putty knife. But, again, be careful because you don?t want to damage the fins.

Danny Lipford: This week we?re mapping out our summer survival guide so that you can get your house ready for the warmer months ahead. Now, earlier we talked about how you can stay cool inside your house, but outside, hey, swimming pool?s not a bad idea. But you have to keep in mind during the summer months the sunlight will deplete the chlorine in the pool and you?ll need to make sure you keep a close eye on that. If it?s a salt type pool like this, it?s less of a concern.

Now most people want to combine the inside and the outside of the home, which is real easy when you have a retractable screen like this. It?s basically invisible. It?ll fold right out of the way. But it gives you an opportunity to keep your home a little cooler and keep all those insects out of the house. And this Phantom screen system is so flexible you can use it on almost any opening on your home.

Beyond doors and windows retractable screens can be added to larger openings to provide the same protection from bugs to even bigger spaces like patios, porches and decks. And when the weather really heats up bugs aren?t the only thing these screens keep out, because Phantom offers solar screen options that block heat gain as well. That effectively converts these areas into usable living space for three seasons of the year without the intrusion of a permanent fixed screen structure to block the view or detract from the home?s architecture.

Allen Lyle: Etymologists have surmised that there are anywhere from six to ten million species of insects in the world. Now, we?re not going to talk about all of those. We?re going to talk about one today. But, come on, what would a summer survival guide be without a chapter on mosquitoes? I hate those things. Take an average-sized yard like this, put 50 people in it. Put me on that side and one mosquito on that side and that mosquito?s going to find me.

Now, for most people just an over the counter repellant is going to get you through the summer. But me, I don?t like spraying chemicals on my skin. So, here?s some chemical-free alternatives that you may want to think about. For topical applications. Just take about two tablespoons of olive oil and add some essential oil to it. About 20 drops of eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil, lemon oil. It?s actually is tingly on the skin. It feels great, it smells wonderful. But mosquitoes can?t stand it, so there?s a good option.

If you?re in one location, here?s something really simple. It involves nothing more than a fan. If you just stand in the way of a fan that?s moving the air pretty much prevents those mosquitoes from landing on you.

Around the yard, I love this tip. Think about this. They look nice, they smell good to you but mosquitoes can?t stand it. lavender, sage, lemon Thai grass, rosemary, very fragrant. Something this simple. Look, marigolds. These are beautiful flowers with a wonderful aroma. Mosquitoes do not like it. So, plant these around your yard.

Now, my favorite tip of all. If you?re doing any barbequing take a sprig of rosemary and soak it in water five to 10 minutes. And then when you?re ready to barbeque you take that sprig and put it on the grill, put it on top of the coals. It?s going to create this beautiful smoky aroma. Your own personal mosquito fogger, and here?s the best part, it?s going to make your steaks and hamburgers taste wonderful.

Danny Lipford: A big part of being outside during this time of the year is protecting yourself from the sun. Now, over the last few decades we?ve learned a lot about how the sun?s ultraviolet rays can really damage your skin. So, I hope you?re doing your part in limiting your exposure to the sun as well as making sure you regularly use sunscreen.

Now, just as the sun can damage your skin, it can also damage those natural fibers like wood outside on your wood deck. So, it needs to have somewhat of a sunscreen to protect it.

For a deck that comes in the form of a wood stain which beautifies the wood and prolongs its life. New wood needs a little time to cure before it?s stained. So check it by pouring a cup of water on the surface to see if it?s absorbed within 30 seconds or so.

Before staining, the surface needs to be cleaned well to prepare it. A concentrated cleaner/brightener mixed with water is a great way to get it ready. Apply it to the wood and scrub it in with a stiff bristle nylon brush. Then let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes before rinsing it all off.

Normally you would need to let the wood dry for two or three days before applying the stain, but this new product called OneCoat from Flood can be applied while the wood is still damp. Whether you roll it on or spray it on, be sure to back brush the stain so that it works it down into the pores of the wood. This is part of the protection it provides. Besides blocking the sun?s UV rays, the stain also seals these pores, preventing water from entering them and leading to earlier decay.

One of the side benefits of staining your deck is because you?re sealing off the pores you?re also going to be discouraging any dirt from getting down in the pores. That means the deck will stay a lot cleaner for a lot longer. Just think, in the course of a weekend how much of a difference you can make on your deck.

Hey, another thing you may want to enhance a little bit is your lawn; and in this week?s Best New Product, Jodi has something that can help you out.

Jodi Marks: You know, I find it harder and harder every year to predict what the weather in the summer is going to be like. I mean, you never know. Is it going to rain? Are we going to have a drought? How?s my lawn going to look?

Well, Scotts has come out with a Turf Builder. It?s going to help eliminate some of that guess work. Take a look at this. This is called their Turf Builder with SummerGuard. And what that SummerGuard does is it helps resist and repel bugs. It also kills them.

It also strengthens the lawn. And there?s a thing called WaterSmart formula in there. So, what that WaterSmart formula does is it helps the roots and the plants and the flowers and also your grass absorb and maintain water in case there is a drought.

Now, it also fertilizes your lawn without burning it up. Of course, because you don?t want that during the summer. So, this is a great easy application that you can put on your lawn or in your garden. And it will help kind of strengthen the roots so that you?ll have a beautiful green lawn all summer long.

Danny Lipford: This week we?re looking at different ways to help you and your home survive those long, hot days of summer. Now, it depends on where you live in the country as to how much rainfall that you may get. And many times during this time of the year it?s kind of feast or famine as far as rainfall. And either of those extremes is really not good for a healthy lawn.

Now, if you get way too much rain, especially in a shady area of your yard, you can get a lot of diseases, fungus. You also can experience a lot of erosion or drainage problems in different areas of the yard. None of that?s good and has to be addressed.

But if you?re dealing with really dry and arid conditions, drought can be the worst. The best place to start drought-proofing your lawn and garden is with a selection of what they include. Some plants are naturally more drought tolerant than others. Which not only means they will survive a dry spell, it also means they will require less maintenance and attention from you. You can also reduce your lawn?s need for water in drought conditions by mowing it a little higher than normal. It puts less strain on the plants.

You might also want to avoid fertilizing when rain is scarce. So you don?t force new growth while the lawn is working hard to sustain itself. Around trees, flowers and vegetables a thick layer of mulch will help insulate the soil and retain the moisture you do have so it doesn?t evaporate too quickly. Now, speaking of that, when you do water, do it early in the morning when the temperatures are cooler and the evaporation rate is lower. Your lawn and garden will get more benefit from the water you?re able to give it.

If you live in an area of the country that gets a lot of annual rainfall, well, your lawn is probably going to love it. But it can have a very negative effect on your house. Now, of course your siding and your eaves, your roof all designed to keep the moisture out of the house. But outside, with a lot of rain and a lot of warm temperatures you?re going to have a little bit of mold and mildew if you don?t keep everything clean.

Now, this mold and mildew can grow on the outside of your house. Fences, arbors, you name it. That?s why it?s so important to know exactly how to handle this situation as a homeowner and to be able to survive the summer. Besides looking bad, this stuff can accelerate the deterioration of paint and the building materials it protects.

The most common treatment for removing mold from outdoor surfaces is cleaning it with a solution of one part bleach to three parts water. If you prefer not to deal with bleach you can use a TSP mixture or try sodium phosphate or a premixed cleaning solution. All of these approaches when combined with scrubbing or pressure washing will work on non-porous surfaces to remove mold and stop its growth.

That doesn?t mean you won?t have to repeat the process year after year, but it does get rid of the existing mold. This should also be done prior to any kind of exterior painting. Then, to lengthen the time between cleanings, choose a paint with a mildewcide in the formula or mix in a mildewcide additive to the paint you use. For a porous surface you?ll have to kill the mold spores themselves or they will quickly grow back. To do this you?ll need an anti-microbial solution that can soak into the pores and attack the spores there. Even this will have to be reapplied year after year to keep mold at bay.

Allen Lyle: Take a look around your house and you might be surprised at how many concrete surfaces you have. I?m talking about your driveways, sidewalks, porches, patios, garages. Now, keep those in mind and consider this statement made by some pretty big players. I?m talking about the American Concrete Institute, the Portland Cement Association, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. All of these people have said that the bulk of all concrete damage can be attributed to moisture infiltration.

Now, concrete looks pretty solid, but it?s actually a very porous surface. So, for those large expanses you may want to consider a concrete sealer. That will seal up the pores, prevent any water from infiltrating down below. For cracks, when you get them, and I say ?when? not ?if,? it will happen, it?s the nature of the beast. When you get cracks like this, what happens is the water starts rushing down in through those cracks and it erodes the soil underneath. Eventually you?re going to get these empty, hollow pockets underneath driveway, walkways. And in this case, you can see we?ve had a truck come across here and found one of those pockets. You don?t want this to happen.

So prevent it ahead of time. When you see cracks like this you want to pick up a tube of concrete repair caulk. It?s textured. That?s the best kind. If you can get something that has a polyurethane base to it, it will flex with the concrete, that?s great. You just apply it like you would any other caulk and that?s going to prevent that water infiltration. And listen, this is a very inexpensive investment for your concrete surfaces.

Melissa asks: What causes my windows to sweat?

Danny Lipford: Now, that is probably the most common question I?ve heard over the last couple of years. And it is quite a problem for a lot of homeowners regardless of the type of windows that you have. Now, condensation on the inside of windows is simply a result of excessive moisture in your home. And that emphasizes the need to use, on a regular basis, your kitchen and bath exhaust fans.

Also, you want to make sure your heating and cooling system is working properly to keep your humidity in your house under control. Now, to see if you have any kind of a problem like that you can pick up one of these. It?s a very simple hydrometer. Only costs about $20. And it?ll tell you exactly the percentage of relative humidity you have in your home. Ideally, you need it to be below 40% to control condensation on your windows. And in more severe situations you may have to install a de-humidifier.

Danny Lipford: You know, anytime you put a to-do list together for some of the things you want to do at your house it can be a little overwhelming. But like we always say, just take it a step at a time. And you put all of these things together and you and your home will be able to survive the long, hot days of summer. And we have a survival guide waiting for you right now at dannylipford.com.

Hey, thanks for being with us. We?ll see you next week.

AstraZeneca grabs Roche pharma head as new CEO

(Reuters) - AstraZeneca Plc has poached Pascal Soriot from rival Roche Holding AG to be its new chief executive, hoping his track record in drug innovation and dealmaking can revive a company battered by clinical trial failures and patent expiries.

Soriot, a 53-year-old French national, has been chief operating officer of Roche's pharmaceuticals division since 2010. He will take up his new job on October 1, AstraZeneca said on Tuesday.

Anglo-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca has been without a permanent CEO since June 1, following the abrupt departure of David Brennan, who was criticized by investors for failing to do enough to shore up the group as a wave of drug patents expired.

The British-based company's chief financial officer, Simon Lowth, has acted as interim CEO since Brennan's exit and will continue to do so until Soriot arrives.

After that, AstraZeneca said Lowth would resume his duties as finance chief and continue to serve as an executive director, although there is likely to be speculation over how long he will remain, since he was also considered a candidate for CEO.

Britain's second-biggest drugmaker has suffered repeated drug development setbacks, stoking fears about its long-term prospects given loss of exclusivity on key medicines, which exposes the group to generic competition and declining sales.

Roche, by contrast, has had a successful record of drug development and Soriot has been at the centre of that innovation as a former head of its U.S. biotech unit Genentech, where he negotiated the sale of full control of the business to Roche.

CHALLENGING JOB

Soriot acknowledged his new job would be a challenge. The entire drugs industry is under pressure from patent losses and pressure on prices, but AstraZeneca's position is worse than its rivals, reflected in the lowest valuation multiple of any Big Pharma firm.

AstraZeneca shares trade on less than eight times this year's expected earnings, against 13 times for Roche.

"No-one is blind to the challenges that confront the pharmaceutical sector and this company, but the underlying strengths of AstraZeneca in delivering on its strategy are clear," Soriot said in a statement.

Appointing Soriot is the first big decision taken by AstraZeneca's new chairman Leif Johansson, who took over on June 1. He praised the Frenchman's "leadership qualities combined with his strategic thinking and relevant experience".

Industry analysts believe the fundamental question for the company's new leadership team is whether to steer AstraZeneca towards bolder large-scale acquisitions or further cost cutting.

Recently, AstraZeneca has stepped up its pace of bolt-on dealmaking. In April it agreed to buy Ardea BioSciences for $1.26 billion, giving it a new gout drug, and two months ago it chipped in $3.5 billion for a half share in Amylin's diabetes drugs in an alliance with Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Some analysts, however, argue that bigger deals are needed to offset the decline in sales of former blockbusters. Its antipsychotic drug Seroquel lost patent protection this year, while heartburn pill Nexium and top-selling heart drug Crestor lose U.S. protection in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

The company did announce European approval on Tuesday for a new antibiotic, Zinfor, but this is not expected to become a major seller and there are few other commercially promising new medicines in its late-stage pipeline.

Swiss-based Roche said diagnostics boss Daniel O'Day would take over as head of its dominant pharma division to replace Soriot and Roland Diggelmann, currently head of the Asia-Pacific region in the diagnostics division, would replace O'Day.

Evolution of the Home Computer | Computer How To Guide

Guest post by Paul Faulk.

In today?s times, having a home computer has become a necessity for families to keep in touch with the social world, do online research, or simply browse the web. Having a home computer has not always been a common household item, however. The home computer has gone through decades of technological upgrades to reach its modern status leading up the world of search engines and SEO that we know today.

computer evolution

Origins of the Home Computer

The first freely programmable computer was created in 1936, and it took years of programming, technological development, and research to evolve the computer into a room-sized processing machine. Computer powerhouse Hewlett-Packard is founded in 1938 in a Palo Alto garage, where David Packard and Bill Hewlett designed an audio oscillator which became a popular piece of testing equipment for computer engineers across the nation. HP entered the consumer computer business after creating the HP-2115 computer that offered computational power that could originally only be found in massive computer systems.

In 1944, a professor from Harvard University completed the Harvard Mark-1. This massive computer filled an entire room and was built to produce mathematical table. During the 1940s, companies on the allied side of the second World War were constructing computers to decipher secret Nazi codes that were intercepted, a function that today?s computers would not need to do.

In 1958, Texas Instruments built the first integrated circuit for computers.?After nearly two more decades of program research and increases in technology, famous computer mastermind Bill Gates and partner Paul Allen found the Microsoft Corporation in 1975. A year later, the late Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) and began selling Apple 1 computer boards.

Modernized Home Computers

The 1980s brought a wave of computers for personal use. IBM introduced its own PC in 1981, which ignited the the rapid growth of smaller more compact personal computers for home use. The Osborne 1, created by Adam Osborne, was the world?s first portable computer. This 24 pound machine cost around $1800 and had a five inch display screen. Commodore introduced the C64 in 1982. It is recognized today as the highest selling computer model in the world by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Apple launched its first iconic Macintosh computer in 1984, which was the first mouse-driven computer with a graphic user interface. In 1990, the world wide web as we know it was created. A physics laboratory in Geneva created what they called the HyperText Markup Language, or HTML, and the HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. In order to browse the web, the Mosaic web browser was released in 1993. This program allowed graphic content for access on the Internet.

The improvements to the computer made from the 1930s to the 1990s is nothing compared to the technology of today. Researchers today are working on virtual reality, processors the size of needles, and improved resolutions on portable computers. Technology today is growing exponentially, so in upcoming years we can expect great things to be created.

Overview of the history of SEO

After Yahoo launched and became a great success in the early 90s, the popular search engines of today Google and DMOZ launched in 1998. Because of Google?s success, Yahoo dropped their Altavista program to use Google?s algorithm. In Google?s algorithms, page rankings were displayed to users through the toolbar. This then had a significant impact in the business world, because companies then desired to rank higher up on search engine search results pages.

SEO

Thus, SEO was born. Search engine optimization allowed businesses to beat their competition and appear higher on search results. To do this, companies manipulated the Google algorithms to make their website rank. It all involves having a large amount of content and referring domains for your website. Google then sees these websites as having a strong supporting background and legitimacy, so they rank these sites higher than others. Google then introduced their Caffeine Algorithm in 2009, which caused a major shift in SEO because companies had to change their SEO tactics. In addition, Google had a Panda Algorithm Update in 2011, followed by a Penguin Algorithm Update in 2012. This updates to the search programming made SEO even more difficult for companies.

Essentially, early computers were not designed around search engines. But recently, computers focus on social more than ever. Companies are focusing on getting their name out there, and through search engine optimization, they can do so.

How's Your Online Strategy: A Social Media Marketing Self ...

Last updated 6 hours 41 minutes ago

Social media presents one of the most effective and affordable outlets for digital marketing. To help you gauge the effectiveness of your company?s online marketing, here are a few questions that will guide you through a social media marketing self-assessment. These questions can help you to audit your current social media efforts and determine whether your organization is doing everything it can to be successful.

Question: What does our company want to accomplish through social media?

Insights: Has your organization drafted a social media plan or policy with a mission statement outlining your major goals? If not, then you may be lost in the world of social media marketing. A social media strategy requires goals and a deep understanding of your own brand and what you want to accomplish online.

Question: How will we measure our success?
Insights: Since social media marketing is relatively low coast, many business owners neglect to measure their relative success with posting updates and reaching new customers. Take advantage of built-in metrics like Facebook Insights and install Google?s free Analytics plugin for your business site to measure incoming traffic from social sites. At least once per year, re-assess your social media efforts using the results gathered from these and other analytical tools.

Question: What will we share on our networks?

Insights: Create a unified and branded social media presence by deciding ahead of time on a voice and editorial strategy. A business social media account should share non-promotional, third-party content more than its own sales-oriented content. Come up with an editorial plan to successful find and share content online to increase the number of ?friends? and ?followers? you have.

Question: How much time and money can we invest in social media marketing?

Insights: Sure, social media marketing is basically free, but it does require a considerable time and labor investment. The most successful companies will set aside working hours for certain employees to contribute to social media marketing. Most social networks have paid promotions for businesses to take advantage of, so research those options and set a budget for any paid social marketing.

If your business is getting started with social media marketing, then you may benefit from the help of an internet marketing professional like Brad Sharenow. Brad is a ReachLocal strategist with experience assisting small New York City businesses with online marketing.
