How do long distance relationships affect different groups of people ...

As a woman who has just moved in with my fianc? and a wedding on the horizon it seems alien to me that I could be separated from my partner for a long period of time. However speaking to a close friend who has a partner currently in the armed forces I realise that some relationships sometimes function without seeing each other for months on end. Out of interest I decided to do a bit more research into this area to see if my friend was in the minority and that there are many groups of people who manage to make long distance relationships work.

Armed Forces

As previously stated one of my close friends has a partner in the Armed Forces and although it?s tough it?s surprising how many couples there are in the Army- take the U.S for example where there is estimated to be around 84,000 military married to military couples.? This statistic may surprise many especially seeing as the armed forces can be posted on deployment for over a year at a time. Admittedly this can cause problems for some relationships as the time apart can impact the feasibility of the relationship being successful however if the trust and discipline is there then a couple can make it work.

In the case of my friends? relationship, things could not be better, plus when he is home from a tour or deployment, you can see why she is prepared to make the wait as all women love a man in uniform especially one from the army with his perfectly ironed suit and glistening military medals on his chest makes it all worthwhile ( wink;)

Students

Another group of people that have to experience long distance relationships are students and this can be problematic especially as due to the age range of the people involved there can be the inexperience and the temptations for one of the partners to try new things. On the contrary there are many students who manage to make a long distance relationship work. If you are reading this and are a student in this position then here is a good article which could give you some useful tips on how to combat the distance between yourself and your partner.

In this situation the best course of action for students who do want to embark on a long distance relationship is to try and see each other as often as possible and when you do meet up do something interesting such as go out and experience thing that you have never tried before. This will help keep the passion alive as you will be sharing unique experiences with each other.

Work Relocation

Relationships are extremely important in order to fulfil happiness however enjoying your job and career can be just as important for making a person happy sometimes unfortunately these collide where one of the partners is forced to go away on business for a substantial period of time. This can cause strain on even the strongest relationships especially if there are children involved as the family is not together all the time. Other insecurities normally arise especially if one of the partners is going out drinking with work after conferences and other business events.

?As my friend pointed out to me a long distance relationship the ultimate test of trust between two people and if you can get through your time apart then you will be ready for anything.?
