Basic chemistry tells us that a bond between atoms can form if it is energetically more favorable for the atoms to stick together than staying apart. This fundamentally requires an attractive force between the atoms. However, new theoretical predictions show that the combination of a repelling force and controlled noise from an environment can also have the surprising effect of leading to a bound state, although one with quite exotic properties. The research team consisting of Harvard postdoc Mikhail Lemeshko and former Harvard postdoc Hendrik Weimer* report their results in the journal Nature Communications [1].

How is it possible that repulsion and noise, both two effects countering the formation of a chemical bond, can lead to a bound state nevertheless? To understand this, one has to take into account the quantum properties of the atoms: adding controlled noise to a quantum system can result in an interference phenomenon that traps the atoms in a well-defined quantum state. The repulsive force then ensures that this trapping occurs at a particular distance, which sets the length of the bond. The nature of the novel bound state is strikingly different from their chemical counterparts. For example, the bound state is remarkably robust and can hardly be broken by depositing a constant amount of energy to it.

Lemeshko and Weimer consider one of the most basic and universally available sources of noise: vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. In the past, the techniques making use of these quantum fluctuations have led to dramatic improvements in laser cooling, culminating in the results that were awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics. The authors believe that the first applications of the discovered binding mechanism might be in the area of cooling of atomic quantum gases.

Final Moments of Incan Child Mummies' Lives Revealed

Three Incan children who were sacrificed 500 years ago were regularly given drugs and alcohol in their final months to make them more compliant in the ritual that ultimately killed them, new research suggests.

Archaeologists analyzed hair samples from the frozen mummies of the three children, who were discovered in 1999, entombed within a shrine near the 22,100-foot (6,739 meters) summit of the Argentinian volcano Llullaillaco. The samples revealed that all three children consistently consumed coca leaves (from which cocaine is derived) and alcoholic beverages, but the oldest child, the famed "Maiden," ingested markedly more of the substances. Coca was a highly controlled substance during the height of the Inca Empire, when the children were sacrificed.

The evidence, combined with other archaeological and radiological data, suggests that the Maiden was treated very differently from the other two children, Llullaillaco Boy and Lightning Girl (so named by researchers because the mummy appears to have been struck by lightning). After being selected for the deadly rite, the Maiden likely underwent a type of status change, becoming an important figure to the empire; the other two children may have served as her attendants. [See Photos of the Incan Child Mummies]

"[The Maiden] became somebody other than who she was before," said study lead author Andrew Wilson, an archaeologist at the University of Bradford in the U.K. "Her sacrifice was seen as an honor."

Hair analyses

To learn about the final moments of a mummy's life, scientists will sometimes turn to hair samples, which provide a record of what substances were circulating in the blood when new hair cells formed. And because hair grows at a relatively constant rate, it can provide a kind of timeline of what a person has consumed (the length of the timeline depends on the length of hair available).

In a 2007 study, Wilson and his colleagues analyzed the child mummies' hair to understand how their diets changed over time. They found that the children came from a peasant background, as their diet consisted mainly of common vegetables, potatoes in particular. But in the year leading up to their deaths, they ate "elite" food, including maize and dried llama meat, and appeared to have been fattened up in preparation for the sacrifice.

Additionally, the 13-year-old Maiden consumed more of the elite food than the Llullaillaco Boy and Lightning Girl, who were both 4 to 5 years old, Wilson noted. (The three children were previously believed to be about two years older than these estimates, but a new analysis of CT scans suggests otherwise.)

In the new study, the scientists analyzed the mummies' hair for cocaine (a major alkaloid of coca leaves) and its metabolite benzoylecgonine, as well as cocaethylene, which forms when both cocaine and ethanol are present in the blood. The scientists created a timeline of coca and alcohol consumption for the children ??due to respective hair lengths, the chronology for the younger children only went back to about nine months before their deaths, whereas the Maiden's timeline spanned about 21 months before death.

The team found that the younger children ingested coca and alcohol at a steady rate, but the Maiden consumed significantly more coca in her final year, with peak consumption occurring at approximately six months before her death. Her alcohol consumption peaked within her last few weeks of life. [Images: Chilean Mummies Hold Nicotine Secret]

The increase in drug and alcohol ingestion likely made the Maiden more at ease with her impending death, Wilson said, adding that she was discovered with a sizeable coca quid (lump for chewing) in between her teeth, suggesting she was sedated when she died.

The chosen one

The children's burial conditions provide further insight into their final moments. The Maiden sat cross-legged and slightly forward, in a fairly relaxed body position at the time of her death. She also had a feathered headdress on her head, elaborately braided hair and a number of artifacts placed on a textile that was draped over her knees.

Furthermore, scans showed the Maiden had food in her system and that she had not recently defecated. "To my mind, that suggests she was not in a state of distress at the point at which she died," Wilson said. It's not clear how the Maiden died, but she may have succumbed to thefreezing temperatures of theenvironment and was placed in her final position while she was still alive or very shortly after death, he said.

By contrast, the Llullaillaco Boy had blood on his cloak, a nit infestation in his hair and a cloth binding his body, suggesting he may have died of suffocation. The Lightning Girl didn't appear to be treated as roughly as the boy, though she didn't receive the same care as the Maiden ??she lacked, for example, the Maiden's decorated headdress and braids.

"The Maiden was perhaps a chosen woman selected to live apart from her former life, among the elite and under the care of the priestesses," Wilson said.

Evidence suggests the imperial rite may have been used as a form of social control. Being selected for the ritual was supposed to be seen as a great honor, but it likely produced a climate of fear. In fact, it was a major offense for parents to show any sadness after giving up their children for the ceremony. More work on the three mummies will reveal more about the Inca society and its practice of ritual sacrifice.

"The exciting thing about these individuals is that they probably still have much more to tell us," Wilson said. "Locked in their tissues are many stories still to unfold."

The work was detailed today (July 29) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Steer clear of auto repair scams - DominicanToday.com

If you feel frustrated or intimidated whenever you take your car in for repairs, you're not alone. According to the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau, auto repair fraud consistently ranks among the top consumer complaints they receive.

Although most auto repair shops are legitimate, some unscrupulous operators will rip off inexperienced car owners by performing unnecessary or unauthorized repairs, substituting counterfeit or used replacement parts, or even doing such shoddy work that lives are endangered.

Here are tips for becoming a more informed consumer and a few common scams to avoid:

Try to have a trusted repair shop already lined up before you need one. Ask friends or your auto insurance company for recommendations, or search the Better Business Bureau's website (www.bbb.org) for accredited businesses. Also: Ask the state Attorney General's office (www.naag.org) whether any complaints have been filed against prospective mechanics. Look for mechanics currently certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (www.ase.com) or who belong to your insurer's authorized repair network. If your car's warranty is still in force, you may be required to use only authorized dealerships.

If your car needs major work, gather several estimates for comparison. Once you've chosen a shop, ask for a detailed estimate (with no sections left blank) before you authorize repairs. Specify that you must be called to grant permission before additional repairs. Make sure the work order clearly specifies: Repairs to be done. All fees, including parts, labor, storage, loaner car, etc. Whether new, reconditioned, or used parts will be used. Acceptable payment methods. Completion date. Diagnostic or reassembly charges if you decide to get a second opinion or have the work done elsewhere.

Make sure the final repair bill contains itemizes all work completed and parts used. (Ask them to show you the work done and replaced parts.) Also have the bill spell out any guaranteed items (including exclusions), in case problems occur later and you need contractual proof.

Watch out for these common scams: They give you a verbal estimate then charge a higher price. Always get it in writing. A shop lures you in with low-cost specials (oil change, brake inspection, etc.), then pads the work order with other repairs you don't want or need.

If in doubt, have the initial work done and get a second opinion on the rest, unless there's an immediate safety issue. Charging for services that are covered under the car's warranty. (Always read your warranty carefully.) Dishonest mechanics have been known to inflict intentional damage during an inspection in order to boost needed repairs.

They don't want to return replaced parts to you, which could mean the work wasn't actually done, or they used inferior parts. (Keep in mind that there could be discarded parts lying around that they could pass off as yours.) Going against your car manufacturer's recommendations. If your manual recommends getting an oil change every 10,000 miles but the mechanic says every 3,000, make sure there's a good reason.

Offers to waive the deductible ? for example, offering to install a used part and bill your insurance company for a new one. This insurance fraud could land you in a world of hurt. High-pressure sales tactics.

Just because you don't completely understand what goes on under the hood doesn't mean you can't protect yourself against auto repair scams. To learn more, visit the FTC's comprehensive Auto Repair Basics site at www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0211-auto-repair-basics.

Cat found on freighter from Philippines to LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A 4-year-old cat that stowed away in a container ship headed from Manila, Philippines, to Los Angeles is gaining weight and getting stronger after the trip without food or water left it near death.

Los Angeles County animal control director Marcia Mayeda says the orange and white female cat was weak and frail after the 7,300-mile trip. But after two weeks of treatments, the feline is in fair condition.

Hospital staff named the cat Pinay (pin-EYE'), a common name for a female Filipino.

The cat has cleared quarantine but needs to be adopted into a calm home because she is still skittish. Potential adopters can email daccevents@animalcare.lacounty.gov.

A year ago, a kitten named Ni Hao (NEE' how) survived a freighter trip from China and was placed in a home.

At least 37 dead after coach plunges into ravine in Southern Italy

? Reuters

(Link to video: Dozens dead in Italian bus crash)

Coach carrying a group of tourists near town of Avellino careered off a viaduct and plunged down a steep slope.

At least 37 people died and many others were injured when a coach carrying a group of tourists through southern Italy crashed into several vehicles, careered off a viaduct and then plunged down a steep slope.

As emergency workers contended with the dark and highly precarious terrain to try to pull bodies from the wreckage, firefighters said most of the bodies had been found inside the coach and a few more beneath the vehicle.

Eleven people - including three children - were injured and taken to hospitals in the surrounding area, the Ansa news agency reported. Two were reported to be in critical condition. State radio quoted Avellino police as saying the bus driver was among the dead.

"The situation is critical. Our men are working to save as many lives as possible," fire chief Pellegrino Iandolo told Sky TG24 television late on Sunday night.

? Reuters
The wrecked bus lies where it fell after plunging off the road near Avellino.

Rescuers wielding electric saws cut through the twisted metal to get to the interior of the bus, stopping occasionally to listen for any cries for help, even as the bodies were put into coffins to be taken to a morgue.

Reports said as many as 49 people had been aboard the bus when it ripped through a guardrail after slamming into several cars, then plunged some 30 metres (100ft) off the highway and into a ravine near a wooded area. The bus tore away whole sections of concrete barriers as well as the guardrail. The concrete lay in large chunks in a clearing where the bus landed.

Television images showed a number of smashed vehicles on the flyover, bodies lying beside the road and the twisted wreckage of the coach lying dozens of metres below the roadside in the undergrowth.

? Reuters
Coffins are lined up near the crash site.

Occupants of cars which were hit by the bus stood on the highway near their vehicles. One car's rear was completely crumpled, while another was smashed on its side. It was not immediately known if anyone in those cars had been injured.

The crash occured about 8.30pm local time between the towns of Baiano Monteforte Irpino, about 40 miles inland from Naples.

Flashing signs had warned of slowed traffic ahead along a stretch of the A16, highway police told state radio early on Monday. They said the bus driver, for reasons not yet determined, appeared to have lost control of his vehicle.

Reports said it hit several cars and then plunged off the viaduct. There was no obvious cause of the crash, but Ansa reported unnamed sources saying police believed there may have been a problem with the coach's braking mechanism.

? The Guardian

A reporter for Naples daily Il Mattino, Giuseppe Crimaldi, told Sky TG24 TV from the scene that some witnesses told him the bus had been going at a "normal" speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars. He said some witnesses thought they heard a noise as if the bus had blown a tyre.

Early reports said the passengers had spent the day in Puglia, an area near the Adriatic on the east coast famed for religious shrines. But on Monday, a state radio reporter at the scene said authorities told him the bus had been bringing the passengers home after an outing to a thermal spa area near Benevento, not far from Avellino.

Others at the scene said the passengers might have visited a town near Benevento that was the early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic monk highly popular among Catholics in Italy.

Passengers came from small towns near Naples, and relatives streamed to the crash site. Initial estimates said there were up to 49 people on board at the time of the accident.

A local prosecutor arrived at the crash scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Obama, Clinton meet for lunch, sparking 2016 buzz

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When is a lunch more than just a midday meal? When the two diners are President Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, and inquiring minds want to know who, if anyone, the president will endorse in 2016.

A summertime meal shared by Obama and his rival-turned-ally threw the political speculation machine into overdrive Monday, highlighting how closely both are being watched for signs of their intentions in the next presidential race.

For Clinton, it's a question of whether the former first lady will take the plunge, launching another campaign eight years after she lost to Obama in a hard-fought primary. For Obama, it's about dueling loyalties to two of his closest advisers who would both covet his endorsement: Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, who is also said to be eyeing the Oval Office.

Such questions set the table for a midday powwow over salad, grilled chicken and pasta jambalaya whipped up by the White House chef and served al fresco on the patio just outside the Oval Office.

Will Clinton tip her hand? Will Obama offer his support? Or will the two dive deep into current events ? bloodshed in Egypt, for instance, or a budding new round of Mideast peace talks that eluded Clinton as secretary of state?

In all likelihood, none of the above.

"The purpose of the lunch was chiefly social," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest, calling it a "chance to catch up" and adding that Obama had initiated the invitation. "Secretary Clinton and the president have developed not just a strong working relationship, but also a genuine friendship."

So what are the chances that Biden popped in for coffee and dessert, a casual reminder that he's still the one with the office closest to Obama's?

"I think the table was set for two," Earnest said.

Not to worry ? Biden will have his own chance to shoot the breeze with his former Senate colleague and 2008 primary opponent on Tuesday. The White House said Biden and Clinton will have breakfast together at the Naval Observatory, the vice president's official residence.

While in the West Wing Monday, Clinton stopped by the office of Susan Rice, Obama's national security adviser who served as U.N. ambassador under Clinton, and visited with John Kerry, Clinton's replacement as secretary of state. Kerry was preparing for an evening dinner marking the relaunch of long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

The lunch isn't the first time Obama and Clinton huddled since Clinton stepped down in February after four years as Obama's top diplomat. They saw each other briefly in Dallas at the opening of former President George W. Bush's presidential library in April. And in March, the Clintons shared a private dinner with Obama that wasn't announced publicly until after the fact.

In the meantime, Clinton has kept up a hectic schedule of speeches and public appearances that has provided further fodder to those urging her to run again. A super PAC seeking to create a campaign-in-waiting in case she runs, Ready for Hillary, recently picked up support from some of Obama's most prominent former campaign organizers.

So it's no wonder that each Obama-Clinton rendezvous is closely analyzed, elating some and prompting eye rolls from others who lament that barely six months in to Obama's second term, talk about his replacement is already reaching a fever pitch.

"In Democratic circles, it makes people fantasize and engage in all kinds of speculation, when in fact it may just be a tete-a-tete between the leader of the free world and the most important person in the Democratic Party," said Hank Sheinkopf, a New York-based Democratic strategist who worked on President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election.

Windows Phone And Android Show Positive Growth In South Africa

Well here's some news for all those sworn Windows Phone fans. The ecosystem has shown some really strong growth in South Africa, a country dominated by BlackBerry, but looks like the Berry has to leave the house there too. Android comes after in South Africa.

Between May and July 2013, Windows Phone saw a near 47% growth, or an increase of 70,000 users. In the same period, Android saw a greater growth of 200,000 users, but a smaller growth percentage of just 20%. iOS and BlackBerry on the other hand haven't been doing well. The number of users has neither dropped nor picked up, which essentially translates to a 0% growth... Zero percent (that can't be a good thing).

That Windows Phone is outselling iOS devices in South Africa was almost unthinkable last year, a feat that deserves applause (Microsoft and Nokia, both rise). According to IDC, the total installed base of Windows Phone should exceed that of iOS by the end of 2013, pretty bold claim, but looks like it may actually pan out. Such a huge growth is largely thanks to Nokia's push with low-cost phones such as the Lumia 620 and Lumia 520 (especially the 520) which have sold in (large) numbers.

BlackBerry on the other end... Well... It's coming to an end.

Trouble within paradise? Nokia blasts Microsof company for Glass windows Phone app failings

Nokia has expressed frustration with Microsoft?s failure to give smartphone users a convincing reason to switch to be able to Windows Telephone, in feedback representing people first indications of strain inside the pair?s relationship.

The Finnish firm?s vice president Bryan Biniak explained Microsoft has not yet held up its end in the bargain due to the fact essential, frontline applications are still absent from the Home windows Phone keep.

In an interview while using IBTimes, Biniak said mobile phone users are unwilling to compromise their mobile existence by switching to the system, regardless of how extraordinary recent computer hardware releases happen to be.

He said Htc is trying in order to ?change the culture? at Microsoft? in order to tension that the combat to overhaul iOS and Android cannot delay any longer.

Give us a reason

He said: "To offer a reason to change, I need to make sure the apps that you care about on your own device are not only on our phones, but they are better. I additionally need to provide you unique activities that you are unable to get on your current other products."

"People rely on applications for his or her day-to-day life if you don?t have an issue that I use inside my day-to-day life That?s not me going to switch [operating systems] because I don?t want to compromise just how I are living my life just to switch to a phone.

"It?s not just in regards to the hardware, it comes down to the tools which might be on the computer hardware. You can?t market a phone with no apps, you only can?t."

No time for you to waste

Nokia?s recent starts have incorporated the remarkable Lumia 925 and the soon to be released 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 cameraphone.

However, the particular Finns are concerned these great mobile phones will stay distinct for possible buyers due to Windows lack of hurry in bringing in top builders to the platform

Biniak added: "We are issuing new units frequently as well as every new device, when there is an software that somebody loves that?s not right now there that?s a have missed opportunity of the sale.

"Were trying to progress the ethnic thinking [at Microsoft] to state ?time is an issue.? Holding out until the end of one?s fiscal year when you need to close your goals, doesn?t perform us anything good when I get phones to trade today."

If you?ll need a job successful?

Although the software gulf in between Windows Telephone and iOS and also Android is not as large since it was, Microsoft?s platform continues to be missing programs like Instagram, a new Facebook software worthy of the actual name, and lastly, Google?s extraordinary suite.

Nokia provides attempted to consider matters in to its own hands, campaigning for the launch of Instagram in Windows Mobile phone, while also acquiring an exclusive deal to bring FIFA ?13 to Lumia Phones.

On that note, Biniak saved their most scathing comment until previous. He said: "As being a company and we don?t want to rely on somebody else along with sit and also wait for the crooks to get it right."

Will Biniak?s remarks jar Microsoft into caring as much with regards to Windows Telephone as it will about Windows 8 along with Xbox? Inform us your thoughts inside the comments area below.

The Lumia 1020 is the phone that will save Htc, according to our own Gareth Beavis. Find out the reason why he perceives the Finns are usually firmly around the comeback trail.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Exclusive: Karen Gillan And Lee Pace Praise Film's 'Wicked Humor'

Guardians

by Brett White

"Guardians of the Galaxy" surprised everyone crowded into the massive Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con International last weekend by showing off a rough cut of what's been shot so far. The big surprise? They've apparently already shot a lot of awesome stuff, according to reports from those lucky enough to see the footage. Jokes from Peter Quill, intergalactic transports, fully animated shots of Groot and Rocket Raccoon?"Guardians" is coming along nicely.

On hand at the panel were non-Guardians Lee Pace and Karen Gillan, who play the less-than-friendly Ronan the Accuser and Nebula in next year's space saga. MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with the duo following the panel?and post-reveal of Gillan's Nebula-style shaved head?to find out what they like most about the film.

"What I'm looking forward to is the comedic element," says Gillan. "[Director James Gunn] just brings both of the things, like depth and comedy, which excites me."

"It's got a wicked, wicked sense of humor," confirms Pace. The two had yet to start filming when this interview went down, but odds are they're on-set and covered in blue body paint as you read this. Check out the rest of the interview below for Gillan and Pace's thoughts on their prep material and being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Now that LeBron James is immune to all the criticism for not being able to win NBA Championships, having just climbed that mountain two seasons in a row as back-to-back NBA Finals MVP, he?s opening the door for haters to bitch and snipe at him for something else: his taste in music.

For the first time, 2K Sports gave control over producing the soundtrack to one of its cover athletes. With this power, King James hand picked 20 songs to make up the soundtrack for NBA 2K14. Some folks will love the mix of songs and genres. Others will no doubt hate it. Or fall somewhere in the middle like me.

Sample the complete soundtrack now at the NBA 2K14 Spotify page.

?2K is letting me take control of some important elements in NBA 2K14, including this year?s soundtrack,? said James, who successfully defended the Miami Heat?s world championship in the NBA Finals, while winning his second straight NBA Finals MVP award. ?I love that I?m the first NBA 2K cover athlete to choose the soundtrack.?

NBA 2K14 Track List:

? Big Krit, Cool 2 be Southern
? Cris Cab, Paradise (On Earth)

(AP) ? Where in the Yankees universe is Derek Jeter?

The New York Yankees aren't saying. The 39-year-old captain was eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday. But he was sent to play in a simulated game at a location manager Joe Girardi won't disclose.

Girardi says the Yankees want Jeter to test his strained right quadriceps without interruption.

Guesses on Twitter regarding Jeter's whereabouts ranged from the Staten Island Yankees field to the Mets' Citi Field in Queens to PlayStation.

For sure, he wasn't at the Yankees' minor league facility in Tampa, Fla., where Alex Rodriguez was rehabbing his strained left quadriceps on his 38th birthday.

Also, Yankees designated hitter Travis Hafner was scheduled for an MRI on his shoulder. He was not in the lineup Saturday against Tampa Bay.

Prosecutors in talks over plea deal in Cleveland kidnappings, sources say

Aaron Josefczyk / Reuters

Ariel Castro at a pretrial hearing on Wednesday.

By Kate Snow, Richard Esposito and Erin McClam, NBC News

Ohio prosecutors Thursday were close to reaching a plea deal with Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man accused of kidnapping three women and holding them captive for a decade. That deal, which he is expected to accept, is life without parole with an additional 1,000 years, NBC News has learned.

Sources involved in the investigation tell NBC News the terms of the deal are likely to become public at a 10 a.m. pre-trial conference.

The deal would allow Castro to avoid the death penalty, and would also forestall a trial, a prospect that threatened to force the city of Cleveland, not to mention the three women, to relive tales of what prosecutors say was Castro?s horror house of torture and rape.

?They?re hopeful that it?s going to come to a speedy conclusion,? Kathryn Joseph, a lawyer for one of the women, said Thursday.

Earlier this month, prosecutors heaped hundreds more criminal charges on Castro, bringing the total number of counts he faced to 977. He pleaded not guilty July 17 at a hearing in which the judge had to ask him to keep his eyes open.

The charges included kidnapping, rape, assault and attempted murder. The attempted murder charge was filed because one of the women told investigators that Castro had impregnated her and forced her to miscarry.

The women ? Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight ? were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004, according to investigators. They were freed in May after Berry broke partway through a door and screamed for help while Castro was out of the house.

The women broke their silence in a three-minute video July 9. In it, Knight said: ?I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face, and my head held high, and my feet firmly on the ground.?

The lead prosecutor in the case, Timothy McGinty of Cuyahoga County, never said whether he would seek the death penalty, only that he was considering it.

A trial was set to begin in August, and lawyers for the three women said that they wanted it wrapped up as soon as possible.

Castro is being held on $8 million bail.

Under siege, JPMorgan to quit physical commodities

By David Sheppard and Jonathan Leff

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co is exiting physical commodities trading, the bank said in a surprise statement on Friday, as Wall Street's role in the trading of raw materials comes under unprecedented political and regulatory pressure.

After spending billions of dollars and five years building the banking world's biggest commodity desk, JPMorgan said it would pursue "strategic alternatives" for its trading assets that stretch from Baltimore to Johor, and a global team dealing in everything from African crude oil to Chilean copper.

The firm will explore "a sale, spinoff or strategic partnership" of the physical business championed by commodities chief Blythe Masters, the architect of JPMorgan's expansion in the sector and one of the most famous women on Wall Street. The bank said it will continue to trade in financial commodities such as derivatives and precious metals.

Pressured by tougher regulation and rising capital levels, JPMorgan joins other banks such as Barclays PLC and Deutsche Bank in a retreat that marks the end of an era in which investment banks across the world rushed to tap into volatile markets during a decade-long price boom.

But JPMorgan is the first big player to exit physical commodities entirely and attention will now turn to Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, which face similar pressures.

Friday's announcement follows a week of intense scrutiny of Wall Street's commodity operations, with U.S. lawmakers questioning whether banks should own warehouses and pipelines, and the U.S. Federal Reserve reviewing a landmark 2003 decision that allowed commercial banks to trade in physical markets.

JPMorgan's own review, which began in February, concluded that the profits from the business were too slight to be worth the risks and costs of dealing with regulators in multiple jurisdictions, according to one person familiar with the matter.

Although the commodity division's $2.4 billion in reported revenue last year surpassed those of long-time rivals Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Morgan Stanley combined, some have queried its profitability due to the costs of running a huge logistical operation. One analyst estimated that physical trade accounted for half or more of overall commodities revenue.

A sale could help JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon make good on his promise to put the bank back on course after a series of costly and embarrassing trading moves and regulatory run-ins, including a potential $410 million settlement over alleged power market manipulation.

But securing a sale may not be straightforward. Several other large energy trading operations are also on the block, at a time when tough new regulations and low volatility have dampened interest in commodity trading. Rival investment banks are unlikely suitors.

Morgan Stanley, which said it had its worst quarter in commodities in decades in the fourth quarter of 2012, has been trying to sell its business since last year. Goldman has looked at divesting its metal warehouse unit Metro since March.

"Where just a few years ago the bulge bracket (banks) were expanding and hiring at a breakneck pace, now retrenchment is the order of the day," said George Stein, managing director of New York-based recruiting firm Commodity Talent LLC.

The news will also bring questions about the future for Britain-born Masters, who started as an intern on JPMorgan's London trading floor two decades ago. After long lagging rivals, she transformed JPMorgan's commodity arm into a global powerhouse in less than five years.

JPMorgan spokesman Brian Marchiony said the bank had "considered many different factors" before deciding to exit the business, "including the impact of potential new rules and regulation."

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE

The announcement came just three days after a powerful Senate banking committee heard from experts who said that metals warehouses owned by Wall Street and other commodities traders were distorting markets and even driving up the cost of aluminum cans for beer and soda. Some said allowing them to trade in physical markets was a risk to the financial system.

"This could be good news for consumers and taxpayers," said Senator Sherrod Brown, member of the Senate Banking Committee.

"Banks should focus on core banking activities," he said.

The Department of Justice and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission have also both launched probes into metal warehousing. When JPMorgan bought the company in 2010, Henry Bath's warehouses were the second largest in the London Metals Exchange system.

JPMorgan's decision is a sharp and unexpected reversal for a bank that has pushed aggressively into the sector since 2008, when it first inherited a host of power trading assets through its acquisition of Bear Stearns during the financial crisis.

That was followed by the acquisition of RBS Sempra Commodities in 2010, allowing the bank to quickly become the largest commodity business on Wall Street, with a global footprint in oil and one of the biggest metal trade desks. Its staff swelled to 600 people across 10 offices.

The bank initially struggled, however, to integrate the entrepreneurial trading unit, and a number of senior traders left. That same year a bad trade in coal markets lost hundreds of millions of dollars, which Masters called a "rookie error."

But it seemed to have found its footing last year, securing new deals and stemming the exodus of talent.

During its short peak, JPMorgan's global commodity operation was considered the largest on Wall Street, supplying crude oil to the biggest refinery on the East Coast and holding enough electricity contracts to power Indiana's 2.8 million homes. It was one of the 10 largest U.S. natural gas traders.

The tide seemed to turn this year.

Already under pressure in Washington following its $6.2 billion "London Whale" loss on derivatives trades last year, in March it learned that the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission was preparing to charge its power traders with manipulating markets in the Midwest and California.

The bank has since scaled back its power business and sold off half of its power trading contracts, Reuters reported earlier this week. Earlier this month its longtime global oil trading head Jeff Frase left the bank.

TOUGH SALE

The decision to move out of the raw materials trade comes months after Dimon vowed to resolve multiple government investigations and correct problems that regulators have found.

Big banks are taking a more conciliatory stance in general with regulators who continue to impose new rules more than five years after the start of the financial crisis.

The impact of the decision may be modest for the bank as a whole, analysts have said. JPMorgan shares ended down 0.8 percent at $56.05 on Friday.

Overall commodity trading at the bank is around 15 percent of total fixed income, currency and commodity trading revenue (FICC), with physical-related trading around 5 to 10 percent of that, bank stock analyst Matt O'Connor at Deutsche Bank said in a report this week after meeting with Dimon. FICC revenue made up less than 15 percent of total bank revenue in the latest quarter.

Still, getting good value for the commodity business may be tough as the market is already crowded.

Morgan Stanley, facing even tougher regulatory pressure over its vast oil division, has been trying to sell its commodities division without success since last year. It may learn by September whether the Federal Reserve will allow it to keep its business, including the logistics unit TransMontaigne.

Hetco, the physical trading shop half owned by Hess Corp, is also in the midst of being sold as Hess is split up. And the energy trading unit of Omaha, Nebraska-based Gavilon may also be for sale after Marubeni Corp excluded it from its takeover of the grains trader this year.

The value of its Henry Bath warehouses, once considered the crown jewel of Sempra, is said to have slumped as the LME prepares to implement tougher rules that are meant to end the lengthy queues that have helped bolster earnings.

"There are questions about the return on capital now," said a senior executive in the warehousing industry. "I don't see many deploying their money."

Industry executives say that there are two types of buyers for these vast, capital-intensive businesses: private equity groups like Carlyle Group, which have recently moved into the space, and sovereign wealth funds like that of Qatar.

But the group could also be a target for one of several merchant traders looking to quickly expand into metals and energy markets.

Freepoint Commodities, a privately owned merchant founded by the original Sempra team, bought back a metals concentrates business from JPMorgan last year. Swiss-based Vitol and Mercuria, two of the world's largest energy traders, have both expanded into metals in the last year.

World energy consumption won't slow down

According to U.S. Energy Information Administration, world energy consumption is projected to increase by 56 percent over the next three decades.

The E.I.A.?s International Energy Outlook 2013, released July 25, presents updated projections for world energy markets through 2040. It says that global energy demand would increase due to prosperity in China and India. Half of the total world increase in energy consumption is attributed to China and India.

?These two countries combined account for half the world?s total increase in energy use through 2040,? said EIA Administrator Adam Sieminski. ?This will have a profound effect on the development of world energy markets.?

Clean-fuel technology is also playing an important role in the outlook, with renewable energy and nuclear power expected to grow faster than fossil fuels over the forecast period.

Other key findings:

? World energy consumption increases from 524 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in 2010 to 820 quadrillion Btu in 2040. The increase in world energy use is largely in the developing world, where growth is driven by strong, long-term economic growth.

? World consumption of energy from all fuel sources through 2040 would increase: Fossil fuels are expected to continue supplying much of the energy used worldwide. Renewable energy and nuclear power are the world?s fastest-growing energy sources, each increasing by 2.5 percent per year; however, fossil fuels continue to supply almost 80 percent of world energy use through 2040.

? Natural gas is the fastest growing fossil fuel in the outlook. Global natural gas consumption grows by 1.7 percent per year. Increasing supplies of tight gas, shale gas and coalbed methane support growth in projected worldwide gas use. Coal grows faster than liquid fuels consumption until after 2030, due to increases in China?s consumption of coal and tepid growth in liquid fuels demand attributed to (1) slow growth in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries, and (2) high sustained oil prices.

First look: Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V shines on

July 24, 2013

Hyper-V 3.0 was perhaps the shiniest of the shining-star features of Windows Server 2012. A number of new capabilities, plus enhancements to existing ones, promise to make Windows Server 2012 R2 an even stronger candidate for the majority of virtualization tasks most organizations need to support. Windows Server 2012 R2 also brings a number of new features to the table specifically aimed at integration with cloud-based services and building out hybrid cloud scenarios.

For larger Hyper-V environments, Microsoft's System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) is the management tool of choice. Managing more than a few virtual machines (VMs) using Hyper-V Manager will quickly become untenable, and almost impossible at any scale. However, it's worth noting that SCVMM 2012 R2 can't perform all tasks supported by Hyper-V Manager at this point in time. This list includes some new R2 features, such as exporting a running VM. Whether these features make it into the final release of SCVMM 2012 R2 remains to be seen.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Virtualization showdown: Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 vs. VMware vSphere 5.1 | 10 great new features in Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V | 10 excellent new features in Windows Server 2012 R2 | Review: Windows Azure shoots the moon ]

At least one change to terminology makes function naming more consistent. In the world of Hyper-V, the term "snapshot" has meant a point-in-time image of a system for later use, should it be necessary to roll back to a previous version. SCVMM has used the term "checkpoint" for the same functionality. Now, whereas Hyper-V Manager in Windows Server 2012 still called it a "snapshot," Hyper-V Manager in the R2 release calls it a "checkpoint." The only remaining exception is the PowerShell command Export-VMSnapshot. You'll also find a Checkpoint-VM cmdlet that will take a snapshot of the specified VM. For all intents and purposes, a checkpoint is the same as a snapshot from previous releases.

A number of features fall into the "new" category in Hyper-V 2012 R2. We'll look at them individually with an eye toward how each makes things easier or faster.

Gen 2 virtual machines
The basic underlying technology of a virtual machine is software emulation of real physical hardware. For the most part, this emulated physical hardware is old and crusty. Microsoft sees this as a problem, particularly when it comes to support for UEFI or secure boot. Security concerns represent a potent motivational factor, so with the goal of reducing the attack footprint, Microsoft took the chance on creating a new base for emulated hardware with a minimal set of components. With this release, the new Gen 2 VMs support only 64-bit versions of Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Preview, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview as guests.

First look: Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V shines on

Generation 2 VMs in Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V will mean faster guest installs and faster boot times, but only Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 guests are supported.?

Air India Ties Up With MakeMyTrip Aims To Tap Growing Leisure ...

It appears now that the National Airlines of India has realized that vitality of Online Travel Agents (OTA). In order to tap the growing audience that prefers to book travels online, Air India has tied-up with OTA MakeMyTrip.?Air India will look beyond airline ticketing & add ?Air India Holidays?, a package offering platform that will be collate domestic as well as foreign destinations. Presently, the section can be accessed via clicking the ?Holidays? Tab on the home-page of Air India.

airindia2

How has Air India laid out the endeavor: Being a national carrier, it has dedicated flight-routes to some of the remote regions where private airlines fear to tread. Leveraging this unique prospect, the carrier has synergized with MakeMyTrip who has specialized in creating holiday experiences of varying group sizes.

Presently, the duo has about 150 Domestic holiday packages & only 2 International ones. Besides working to augment the same, the companies have demarcated the same into Standard & Deluxe Variants which offer Business or Economy Class while flying with the airlines. The packages include accommodation on twin-sharing basis, meals, airport transfers, sightseeing and inter-city travel as applicable

Why this partnership holds potential: In the recent past private airlines have carved a niche for themselves in both the categories, i.e. no-frills, cheap air-tickets & luxurious travelling too. Meanwhile Air India has had its image take a beating owing to ageing airlines & routine lack of enthusiasm from the Government to upgrade infrastructure.

But, Air India has one of the largest offline & physical network of ticketing agents. Agents who are affiliated with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will have a secure & dedicated access to Air India?s Travel Deals. Besides offering these to the customers via offline routes, the agents can easily book the same & even collect the payment.

Online Travel segment has surely been a very lucrative field which has redefined travel for the masses & the elite alike. Do you think Air India?s offering will make an equally deep impact?

Could HYCCUPS boost phone battery life? - Phys

A new system that goes by the name of "hybrid contextual cloud in ubiquitous platforms comprising of smart phones" or HYCCUPS for short, has been developed by Romanian computer scientists. The system discussed in a forthcoming research paper in the International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications, boosts phone battery life by booting power-consuming computational tasks on to an on-the-fly ad-hoc cloud in which smart phones are both clients and computing resources.

Radu-Corneliu Marin of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, explains how the advent of the smart phone gives almost everyone a very powerful computer for communications, watching and editing videos, taking photographs, browsing the web and even making phone calls. However, computer power usually comes at a price in the form of massively increased power consumption. This means that users who switch from older phones that lasted a week on a single charge are soon frustrated by how quickly the battery drains on their new device, usually in a matter of hours rather than days if it is used intensively.

Much of the computational activity used by a smart phone to carry out various tasks could be offloaded on to other mobile devices, just as it now often is with a desktop or laptop computer. The device itself then becomes an interface to applications running on other phones "in the cloud" and simply uploads raw data and downloads the processed material as and when it is needed. As more and more functionality can be ported to the cloud in this way, so the central processing unit (CPU) of the device requires less power, which means longer battery life.

HYCCUPS is, Marin explains, middleware - software that sits between the end-user device, the smart phone in this case, and the mobile cloud. The system creates a hybrid cloud allowing smart phones to schedule and offload process execution on to other resources and so reduce energy consumption to save battery life. The scheduling process itself is assisted by a contextual search technology that works behind the scenes without user intervention to predict the availability and mobility of mobile resources - such as other smart phones on a user's high-speed wireless, Wi-Fi, network - so that the whole power-saving process can be optimised without loss of service or slowing down applications.

Elements Of Athlete Success: Employing A Coach - Triathlete Europe

  • By Matt Dixon
  • Published July 23, 2013
  • Updated 21 hours ago

Access to information and coaching opportunities is not an issue. The issue is filtering the good from bad, and the athlete getting on a long-term journey of progression that is effective for them. What does an athlete really need from a coaching programme? This is a good question and one that I have spent a great deal of time thinking about. It would be easy to create a massive laundry list of components of a good programme, but I think we can bucket together the key components of a coaching programme that make for successful performance evolution. No matter the level of competition, athletes are typically successful if they can access what I list below.

Smart training plan: This is typically the cornerstone of any coaching programme but unfortunately this is where it often ends. This ?bucket? should include a long-term vision or roadmap for the athlete, a seasonal roadmap of training progression and ongoing review of this progression. The actual daily training plan should facilitate consistent application of training load and a smart progression throughout the racing season. This plan also needs to be flexible and specific enough to allow training to integrate into an athlete?s life and create positive training and performance adaptations. It all sounds pretty simple.

Education and guidance: All of the above is pretty useless without a strong element of ongoing education and guidance. Coaching is as much about mentoring and tutoring, as it is about planning and workouts. Athletes need to be armed with the knowledge and tools to allow them to evolve their ?athletic IQ? and begin to make their own smart decisions. This is a never-ending process of guidance around all aspects of performance including season planning, nutrition, skills, mental approaches, race strategy, sleep and travel. The list is endless.

The depth of education and guidance increases as the relationship with the individual or group evolves. If a coach commits to this, the result is that athletes begin to develop a stronger ?filter? for the great amount of information available in the endurance space, especially since much of it has potential to harm progression and performance. It actually makes the coach?s job easier in the long run because athletes become smarter and more self-sufficient in the supporting components of performance.

Feedback and support: A smart plan and all the education in the world doesn?t automatically create great athletes. As an athlete takes their journey there is a great need for ongoing feedback, support, guidance and mentorship to help them learn, make smart decisions and apply the training plan as intended. This is the tough part for athletes who are self-coached. Without a strong mentor or guide who can maintain an objective lens and help make smart decisions, it is challenging to create an ongoing successful career. Athletes need mentors and support, and a coach is a good option for many.

Community: The final element is the X-factor but some form of community, belonging and camaraderie is a powerful addition for many athletes. Whether it is being part of a club, a swim programme or simply having training buddies, community and belonging creates a great sense of accountability, enjoyment, reward and support. ?Suffer together, succeed together?, should be the mantra. Few can live in a bubble and thrive. It takes a unique character and some form of community can help accelerate an athlete?s progression.

If you are reflecting on your progression as an athlete, or thinking about seeking outside advice or guidance, the above elements should act as a framework to look for a successful set up for yourself.

To apply these elements of coaching there is little doubt that the optimal environment is daily interaction and ?on-deck? guidance from your coach. In San Francisco we have a series of daily swim, bike and run sessions for our training group. So much can be gained for the local athletes from the daily interaction, feedback and guidance. This is not always possible and many of my elite athletes are geographically dispersed around the world. This makes communication all the more important, and for the elite athletes we bridge the periods of separation with frequent training camps to allow ?real coaching? to occur. For amateur athletes, it is not always possible to find a quality coach that delivers the above elements (at least well) close to home, so the athlete needs to make small compromises and understand how to help themselves within a longer-distance relationship. There are a few things that athletes can do to make a longer distance relationship more effective:

Own their sport: It sounds simple but creating ownership around your own training and progression is both empowering and beneficial. Rather than viewing the coach or programme as simply spoon-feeding a plan to success, athletes can succeed if they shift their lens to using the coach as a strong resource and technical guide for programming and information. Collaboration is better than a dictatorship, and so I would urge athletes to be wary of coaches who use terms such as ?because I said so? or ?because it worked with X?. Own your sport and become an active participant in your own process.

Commit to a path: Understand that the coaching process is a journey and can often take a while, so committing to the path and maintaining a ?healthy skepticism? throughout is likely a good thing. Of course, while it is good to question sometimes, a certain level of belief and trust is essential.

Do your homework: To truly commit to the above points it is key that you first find a coach that is the right fit for you. We all have different personalities, needs and approaches. I have turned down world-class athletes, not because I didn?t like them, but I felt I was not the best coach for them. Take time to consider the approach of the coach, talk to some of their athletes if possible and look at more than one option. Like buying a car, you don?t simply buy the first one you find. Instead, you test-drive a few, look at the reviews and choose one that fits your needs. Do the same with a coach.

To follow on from the last point I guess this begs the question, ?what makes a good coach??. The easy answer to this would be someone who creates champions, but I am not sure if I agree with something this simple. When I think about great coaches, I think they succeed in (note, I am using examples of more elite coaches below, but the lessons and components relate to all coaches who help athletes of any level) in the following:

Making ?champions?: If you have a history of developing athletes who become world-class this is a strong indication of coaching success. With this comes a word of warning and a story. If a coach leads a group of 25 athletes in their careers, and one of their athletes has massive success, but the story of the other 24 is injury, deep fatigue, short careers and destruction, are they are great coach? Did they make a champion or did they destroy the many other potential champions? I think it is important to look beyond any single athlete results, and look for the trends and history of all the athletes the coach develops.

The art of development: True coaching includes taking an athlete with potential and developing them throughout a career toward their own excellence. This journey is complex and shows the coach?s ability to not only provide a plan, but create vision, a career roadmap, be a strong teacher and mentor, and empower athletes to success. Most coaches agree that stories of development are the ones that provide the biggest source of pride and satisfaction.

Range of assistance: While some coaches have, understandably, types of athletes they specialise in, great coaches have the ability to lead, develop and improve a wide range of athletes. This is less about gender or race distance, and more about the coach being dynamic in leading different personalities, body types and athletes who respond to different training approaches in different manners. A ?one size fits all? approach seldom leads to a great coach, rather, it often leads to ?one size fits some, and the others fall to the side?.

Sharing: The last one is an X-factor, but I think it is worth inclusion. Any coach who is willing to open their book of coaching approach is normally one who is confident and has thought through their approach and reasoning. For me, it is a sign of confidence, and something that should be embraced by more coaches. There are exceptions, but many coaches who claim secrecy or refuse to share that training, often lack the confidence in what they are doing, or perhaps even the substance and understanding of what they are actually prescribing. Good coaches understand that coaching success is not about the workouts. Sure, workout design is important, but a good coach could give a year?s worth of workouts to any other hopeful, and the chances of the hopeful achieving similar results would be slim. It is the recipe, and the execution of that recipe, that makes a coach or programme successful.

As you go on your journey of self-improvement, take note of the lesson of great athletic success. Whether it is from trusted friends, a local coach with all the tools or a coach from further away that feels like a good fit, ensure that you set up your training and performance approach to suit you and your needs. Take ownership of your journey, and don?t simply look for the ?flavour of the month? and think that they are the right coach for you.
