Pujara needs to prove himself overseas as well, says Sunil Gavaskar ? Cricket News Update

Though happy with Cheteshwar Pujara?s composed knock in India?s first innings of the ongoing Ahmedabad Test against England, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar said that the real Test for the rookie batsman will be to prove himself in overseas conditions.

Pujara, the 24-year-old Gujarat batsman, smashed an unbeaten double ton to help India score a mammoth 521 for 8 declare in their first innings of the ongoing Ahmedabad Test. After Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir provided the side with a solid platform, sharing an opening stand of 134 runs, England made a comeback into the match through Graeme Swann, who accounted for the two openers and Sachin Tendulkar in the second session.

However, Pujara helped the hosts come out of the shock sharing a 130-run stand with the comeback man Yuvraj Singh. The rookie batsman, playing only his sixth Test match was not out on 206 when MS Dhoni decided to declare India?s innings on 521 for 8, in the final session of the day on Friday.

?We all know that he has got a very good temperament,? Gavaskar told a news channel. ?We saw that when he scored that 70 against Australia before scoring a hundred against New Zealand. But the real test for both batsman and bowler comes overseas and that's where he will have to show whether he is an able replacement for Rahul Dravid," the veteran Maharashtra batsman added further.

Iconic Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar once again failed to impress with the bat, managing just 13 runs from 18 deliveries before offering an easy catch to Samit Patel off Graeme Swann. However, Gavaskar said that the Batting Maestro getting out for a low score was not a cause for concern.

Gavaskar, a veteran of 125 Tests and 108 One day Internationals, also advised the Indian bowlers to stick to their line and length and not be afraid of giving the ball some flight.

?It's going to slow down. If they hit the right length India might win the match in four days,? said the 63-year-old former cricketer. ?They should not be afraid of tossing the ball around, that's when you can get the batsman to commit on the front foot."
