EGYPT has been pitched back into crisis after its President, Mohammed Morsi, ordered the disbanded Parliament to convene.
The order came hours after Dr Morsi met William Burns, the US Deputy Secretary of State, and an announcement that US President Barack Obama will meet Egypt's first Islamist leader at the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who leads the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) that governed Egypt after the dictator Hosni Mubarak's overthrow, called an emergency meeting after Dr Morsi annulled a judicial order to disband the democratically elected Parliament.
The Parliament, elected in a series of polls between November 2011 and January 2012, is dominated by the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood - of which Dr Morsi is a member - and its allies.

A terse statement on the state news agency said SCAF had met to ''study and discuss the repercussions of President Mohammed Morsi's decision to reconvene Parliament''.
Dr Morsi's announcement added that another election would be held within 60 days of a new constitution being approved by the nation in a referendum. Dr Morsi is keen to ensure that Parliament will be responsible for legislation in the meantime, not the generals.
The Supreme Constitutional Court - consisting of judges appointed under the Mubarak regime - ordered the lower house of Parliament to be dissolved on June 14 after finding one-third of the MPs were party members who had run for seats reserved for independent candidates. The generals implemented the decision two days later and issued a decree outlining presidential powers on June 17, even before presidential election votes were counted.
It also ruled as unconstitutional the law that sought to bar senior members of the Mubarak regime and his National Democratic Party from running for office for 10 years.
The Speaker of Egypt's Parliament, Saad El-Katatni, later called on the legislature to convene today.
