How Close Is Iran to Exploding Its First Nuclear Bomb?

iran, nuclear bomb, graham t. allison, low-enriched uranium Image:

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

Over the past decade Iran has been cautiously, but steadily, putting in place all the elements it needs to construct a nuclear weapon in short order. But as James R. Clapper, director of National Intelligence, told the U.S. Senate in January, while the Iranians are ?moving on that path ... we don?t believe they have actually made the decision to go ahead with a nuclear weapon.?

For several years experts have debated the possibility of a ?breakout? scenario in which Iran makes a mad dash to complete and test its first bomb before other nations can act to stop it. That would require doing as much as possible to prepare for bomb making without tripping the alarms of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the source of most good intelligence about Iran?s declared program. From that point, Iran would then race to conduct a test quickly, perhaps in as little as several weeks. How close is Iran to achieving such an option?

Let us start with what we know. Since 2006 Iran has accumulated a stockpile of low-enriched uranium (LEU), containing 5 percent of the uranium 235 isotope, putatively to fuel future civilian nuclear reactors. If Iran were to enrich this material further, to the point at which 90 percent of it was uranium 235, it would provide the core of four nuclear bombs. Since February 2010 it has also been enriching uranium to 20 percent and has recently tripled the production rates of this material. It has also experimented with centrifuges that are three to six times more efficient than the first-generation centrifuges it is currently operating (the designs for which it got from Pakistan?s nuclear god?father A. Q. Khan). These are significant steps toward making a bomb. Producing 20 percent enriched uranium requires nine tenths of the time and effort needed to make bomb-usable uranium. The IAEA suspects that although Iran may well have suspended its dedicated nuclear weapon research program in 2003, by that time it had already learned enough to be able to make such uranium into a simple, testable nuclear weapon.

The state of Iran?s declared stockpile and production capabilities is fairly well known. But it may well have undeclared capabilities, materials and know-how. In addition to the facilities at Natanz and Fordow that the IAEA inspects regularly, it is reasonable to assume that Iran has invested in hidden enrichment facilities because both Israel and the U.S. have been threatening air strikes on these targets for many years. Although no one has reported evidence that Iran has bought nuclear weapons or material from the former arsenal of the Soviet Union or from North Korea, Iran?s leaders must have considered this option as well. We know that more than one bomb?s worth of fissile material went missing after the Soviet Union collapsed.

With the centrifuges now known to be operating, from where Iran stands today it would take at least five months to produce enough material for one bomb. As more centrifuges come online and production rates improve, this timeline will shorten. But any scenario that requires months between tripping the IAEA?s alarm and testing a bomb would mean taking a huge risk of being attacked, something Iran?s supreme leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei has so far assiduously avoided.

How then could Iran produce a nuclear bomb without getting bombed? The most worrisome scenario would be for it to ?sneak out.? Iran would complete the conversion of its low-enriched uranium stockpile to 20 percent at declared facilities, as it is now doing. Simultaneously, it would install advanced centrifuges at a secret facility. At the chosen moment, it would stage an incident?say, an explosion at Fordow?that it would claim had dispersed such high levels of radioactivity that the area had to be quarantined for several weeks, making inspections impossible. (It could even blame the incident on an Israeli covert attack.) Under this cover, Iran would move the 20 percent uranium to the secret facility and complete the enrichment to weapons-grade levels. Because the U.S., Israel and the IAEA would be unable to determine whether declared stockpiles had been moved or where they had been moved to, they might find themselves unable to act. In this scenario, Iran could produce enough weapons-usable uranium to conduct a test in as little as a few weeks.

How to Help Your Cat Adjust to New Surroundings | Best Pet Jobs

When it comes to adjusting to new surroundings, it can be an extremely frightening experience for a cat. Helping your cat to adjust is pivotal in helping him feel at home. The following are a few tips on how to help your new cat adjust to his new home environment:

The First Ride Home

For a cat (or kitten), riding in a car can be a traumatic experience. Your cat should be placed in a secure carrier. Never let your cat roam loose while your car is in motion. Make sure he?s kept in the carrier until you have arrived safely home.

Get a Feliway Diffuser

A Feliway Diffuser is a plug-in that helps release feliway. This basically reduces stress related behavior in cats. It is an odorless and toxic-free product that?s safe around humans and other animals. Make sure you buy a Feliway Diffuser before your pet arrives.

A Feliway Diffuser helps reduce excessive urine making, appetite loss, Decreased desire to play and vertical scratching. Cats normally experience these symptoms when they are under stress. A feliway is helpful to use when you invite visitors to your home. It can help cats to adjust to living with more than one cat. Plus, you can use a feliway when traveling with your cat on vacation.

A Guide to Basic Etiquette When Using a Chauffeur ... - Toronto Limo

Last updated 16 hours ago

Whether you are using a wedding limo, prom limousine services, or just getting a ride to the airport, proper etiquette will make the journey more enjoyable for everyone. Make the effort to be polite and personable to get the most out of your limo ride. Before you slide into the vehicle, brush up on your limousine etiquette to enhance your overall experience:

  • Include a Tip
A limo service combines a luxury vehicle with the highest quality customer service. Show your chauffeur your appreciation by including a tip with your ride. A fair tip is generally anywhere between 10% 15%. If you really enjoyed your experience, though, show your gratitude with a larger tip.
  • Use Restraint When Drinking
It is okay to enjoy some of the beverages provided in the limo, just try not to consume too much. Even though the chauffeur handles the driving for you, it is impolite to drink too much during the course of your limo ride. Take it easy when drinking so you and the driver can have an enjoyable evening.
  • Do Not Overfill the Vehicle
Whether you are traveling in a private or a corporate limo, it is important to avoid inviting too many passengers into your car. Overfilling the vehicle makes it more dangerous to drive. Do not put yourself, your fellow passengers, and your driver at risk of a traffic accident. Adhering to passenger suggestions will give you more space inside the limo and decrease your chances of getting into an accident.

Whether you need leisure or corporate limo services, 5 Star Limousine has Toronto?s transportation covered. It is our pleasure to bring you luxury vehicles and the best chauffeurs in the industry. We offer services for weddings, proms, business events, and all of your other transportation needs. For more information, visit us online or call (647) 955-7169.

SageOne: All In One Service For Invoices, Cash and Projects For Busy

Many of us use several applications to manage our growing businesses. While this is not the worst thing we could be doing in our businesses, it?s surely not the most efficient way of managing the day to day operations of our businesses.

When you think about your business it?s the INVOICES that you send out that are critical because you can not get paid unless you send invoices and follow up. It?s the CASH in your bank account (credit cards, lines of credit) that are critical for the day to day operations of your business (paying those crucial consultants and employees). PROJECTS are why people HIRE YOU. If you can?t manage your projects ? you?re out of business.

Sage, makers of Peachtree, ACT! and other software knows this and has been working for some time now on a new solution ? SageOne.

In a recent Sage survey among businesses with 0 to 9 employees, 66 percent said they use three or more software applications to manage their day-to-day operations. This often can lead to wasted time, truncated workflow, redundant data entry and errors.

?We took a very different approach with the development of Sage One U.S. Not only did we leverage our deep expertise in business solutions, but we complemented it by proactively seeking extensive feedback from entrepreneurs and small business owners to determine what it is they needed in a SaaS-based financial management, project tracking and collaboration solution,? said Connie Certusi, executive vice president and general manager, small business accounting solutions, Sage North America. ?Built from the ground up, Sage One U.S. combines the key functions small businesses need, delivering them to the cloud and eliminating multiple systems and duplicate processes that leave room for error. Sage One U.S. helps entrepreneurs?get work done?and get paid more quickly, allowing?them to focus on building and growing their business, and realizing their ambitions.?

?

Online collaboration

Businesses that provide professional services, assign tasks to one or more people or send invoices to clients for work performed will benefit from many of the features in Sage One U.S.. The collaboration capabilities of Sage One U.S. can?assist businesses with co-located or distributed teams?of?employees and contract workers ? even clients?? share and communicate, so no one works in isolation. Automatic notifications, reminders and tracking of in-progress or completed tasks keep everyone updated and simplify administration.

Accounting simplified

Sage One U.S. also simplifies and automates essential accounting by connecting business management functions. Less time is spent on data entry because information needs to be entered only once: a project becomes an invoice and then becomes a receipt. Users can rest easy knowing that all the accounting is being handled properly behind the scenes.

?

Living solution

Addressing the needs of entrepreneurs and start-ups has been the primary focus in the development of Sage One U.S. Small business owners have been involved from the very beginning and their feedback has been instrumental in shaping the functionality and design of the newest Sage online offering.

?

?We met with and had many conversations with entrepreneurs and start-ups and found that for many, accounting software had an overabundance of features that they simply weren?t using or that weren?t helping them be more efficient,? said Mike Savory, senior product manager, Sage One U.S. ?What we wanted to do was deliver a web-based solution with features and functionality that they want and need; not what we thought they needed. The result is Sage One U.S., a tool that will provide customers a boost to their business and enable them to manage their business the way they want to with anytime, anywhere access.?

?

One key feature of Sage One U.S. is that it will continue to evolve based on feedback from customers and partners. Ongoing improvements and new features will be introduced over time to support the growth needs of entrepreneurs and start-ups.

?

Technology and security infrastructure

Sage One U.S. has a simple, flexible architecture with an appealing look and feel, developed using Ruby on Rails. Security and quality of design have been built into Sage One U.S. from the ground up, including rigorous vulnerability testing throughout development, and 128-bit encryption to safeguard the integrity of data in transit. Data is stored in a highly secure environment managed by the experts at Amazon and is also continuously backed up to a secondary data center in a separate physical location.

Subscription pricing

Sage One U.S. is available from Sage at?na.sageone.com?for $29 per month, which includes two administrative users, unlimited collaborative users (who can share projects, files, etc.), and five gigabytes of storage. Subscription also includes online and phone support.

East Texas man accused of robbing store with rake

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV)- The Angelina County Sheriff's Office is charging an Alto man with aggravated robbery after he allegedly robbed a store using a rake early Sunday.

According to a press release, deputies responded to a burglar alarm at the Polk's near the Idlewood subdivision on US 69 North at 3:24 a.m. When they arrived, they learned a man came into the store with a towel wrapped around his head and threatened employees using rake-like instrument.

The suspect demanded money and ordered the employees to a back room of the store. The suspect then took cash from the register, beer and tobacco and left the store in a white Buick, according to the report.

Deputies and officers with Lufkin Police located and stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Calvin Lewis Rushing, 43, according to the report.

Rushing still had the towel and rake in the car, according to the report, and matched the description from the surveillance video.

Rushing has previous convictions of robbery, aggravated robbery, burglary and escape and was out on parole for a robbery conviction. The Texas State Board of Paroles has put a hold on Rushing in the Angelina County Jail.

The Worst Union in America: How the California Teachers Association betrayed the schools and crippled the state

In 1962, as tensions ran high between school districts and unions across the country, members of the National Education Association gathered in Denver for the organization?s 100th annual convention. Among the speakers was Arthur F. Corey, executive director of the California Teachers Association (CTA). ?The strike as a weapon for teachers is inappropriate, unprofessional, illegal, outmoded, and ineffective,? Corey told the crowd. ?You can?t go out on an illegal strike one day and expect to go back to your classroom and teach good citizenship the next.?

Fast-forward nearly 50 years to May 2011, when the CTA?now the single most powerful special interest in California?organized a ?State of Emergency? week to agitate for higher taxes in one of the most overtaxed states in the nation. A CTA document suggested dozens of ways for teachers to protest, including following state legislators incessantly, attempting to close major transportation arteries, and boycotting companies, such as Microsoft, that backed education reform. The week?s centerpiece was an occupation of the state capitol by hundreds of teachers and student sympathizers from the Cal State University system, who clogged the building?s hallways and refused to leave. Police arrested nearly 100 demonstrators for trespassing, including then?CTA president David Sanchez. The protesting teachers had left their jobs behind, even though their students were undergoing important statewide tests that week. With the passage of 50 years, the CTA?s notions of ?good citizenship? had vanished.

So had high-quality public education in California. Seen as a national leader in the classroom during the 1950s and 1960s, the country?s largest state is today a laggard, competing with the likes of Mississippi and Washington, D.C., at the bottom of national rankings. The Golden State?s education tailspin has been blamed on everything from class sizes to the property-tax restrictions enforced by Proposition 13 to an influx of Spanish-speaking students. But no portrait of the system?s downfall would be complete without a depiction of the CTA, a political behemoth that blocks meaningful education reform, protects failing and even criminal educators, and inflates teacher pay and benefits to unsustainable levels.

The CTA began its transformation in September 1975, when Governor Jerry Brown signed the Rodda Act, which allowed California teachers to bargain collectively. Within 18 months, 600 of the 1,000 local CTA chapters moved to collective bargaining. As the union?s power grew, its ranks nearly doubled, from 170,000 in the late 1970s to approximately 325,000 today. By following the union?s directions and voting in blocs in low-turnout school-board elections, teachers were able to handpick their own supervisors?a system that private-sector unionized workers would envy. Further, the organization that had once forsworn the strike began taking to the picket lines. Today, the CTA boasts that it has launched more than 170 strikes in the years since Rodda?s passage.

The CTA?s most important resource, however, isn?t a pool of workers ready to strike; it?s a fat bank account fed by mandatory dues that can run more than $1,000 per member. In 2009, the union?s income was more than $186 million, all of it tax-exempt. The CTA doesn?t need its members? consent to spend this money on politicking, whether that?s making campaign contributions or running advocacy campaigns to obstruct reform. According to figures from the California Fair Political Practices Commission (a public institution) in 2010, the CTA had spent more than $210 million over the previous decade on political campaigning?more than any other donor in the state. In fact, the CTA outspent the pharmaceutical industry, the oil industry, and the tobacco industrycombined.

All this money has helped the union rack up an imposing number of victories. The first major win came in 1988, with the passage of Proposition 98. That initiative compelled California to spend more than 40 percent of its annual budget on education in grades K?12 and community college. The spending quota eliminated schools? incentive to get value out of every dollar: since funding was locked in, there was no need to make things run cost-effectively. Thanks to union influence on local school boards, much of the extra money?about $450 million a year?went straight into teachers? salaries. Prop. 98?s malign effects weren?t limited to education, however: by essentially making public school funding an entitlement rather than a matter of discretionary spending, it hastened California?s erosion of fiscal discipline. In recent years, estimates of mandatory spending?s share of the state?s budget have run as high as 85 percent, making it highly difficult for the legislature to confront the severe budget crises of the past decade.

In 1991, the CTA took to the ramparts again to combat Proposition 174, a ballot initiative that would have made California a national leader in school choice by giving families universal access to school vouchers. When initiative supporters began circulating the petitions necessary to get it onto the ballot, some CTA members tried to intimidate petition signers physically. The union also encouraged people to sign the petition multiple times in order to throw the process into chaos. ?There are some proposals so evil that they should never go before the voters,? explained D. A. Weber, the CTA?s president. One of the consultants who organized the petitions testified in a court declaration at the time that people with union ties had offered him $400,000 to refrain from distributing them. Another claimed that a CTA member had tried to run him off the road after a debate on school choice.

Weber and his followers weren?t successful in keeping the proposition off the ballot, but they did manage to delay it for two years, giving themselves time to organize a counteroffensive. They ran ads, recalls Ken Khachigian, the former White House speechwriter who headed the Yes on 174 campaign, ?claiming that a witches? coven would be eligible for the voucher funds and [could] set up a school of its own.? They threatened to field challengers against political candidates who supported school choice. They bullied members of the business community who contributed money to the pro-voucher effort. When In-N-Out Burger donated $25,000 to support Prop. 174, for instance, the CTA threatened to press schools to drop contracts with the company.

In 1993, Prop. 174 finally came to a statewide vote. The union had persuaded March Fong Eu, the CTA-endorsed secretary of state, to alter the proposition?s heading on the ballot from?PARENTAL CHOICE?to?EDUCATION VOUCHERS?a change in wording that cost Prop. 174 ten points in the polls, according to Myron Lieberman in his book? The Teacher Unions. The initiative, which had originally enjoyed 2?1 support among California voters, managed to garner only a little over 30 percent of the vote. Prop. 174?s backers had been outspent by a factor of eight, with the CTA alone dropping $12.5 million on the opposition campaign?

So when Mr. Metcalfe tells us that he?s just seen the ?most amazing vehicle?, you know it?s a really special automotive that we?re talking about here. And the legend doesn?t appear to have been totally off the mark with his lavish praise. The Scamander ATV created by Peter Wheeler takes it all-terrain promise a little too seriously delivering a tip speed of 120mph on land going up to 60 mph from a standing start in around 6 seconds thanks to a V6 engine capable of outputting 300-horsepower.

Patrick Fitzgerald, nemesis of Rod Blagojevich, steps down

US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald on Thursday ruled out two options for his next career move, saying he?s not wired to run for office and quipping, 'Can you see me as a defense attorney?'

Patrick Fitzgerald, the US attorney who became a household name after earning convictions for two sitting Illinois governors and other high-profile figures, announced Thursday that he is stepping down.

Clocking 11 years on the job, Mr. Fitzgerald is the longest-serving US attorney in Chicago history. His aggressive pursuit of corruption routinely earned him comparisons to Eliot Ness, the famed Prohibition agent in the Al Capone era.

?He went after City Hall and really rooted out a lot of corrupt people who were major political players,? says Evan McKenzie, an attorney and associate professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. ?He was combating corruption, and anyone who knows this state knows corruption is an enormous problem.?

In a statement released Wednesday, US Attorney General Eric Holder described Fitzgerald ?as a prosecutor?s prosecutor? and said he served ?with the utmost integrity and a steadfast commitment to the cause of justice.?

Fitzgerald did not reveal why he was exiting office, nor did he offer clues as to the next steps in his professional life, besides saying he wants to remain in Chicago. Former US prosecutors often have four choices when they leave their positions, Professor McKenzie says: politicians, white-collar defense attorneys, civil litigators, and judges.

At a press conference Thursday morning, Fitzgerald ruled out at least two of the four.

?I?m not wired to campaign for anything or run for elective office, period,? he said. Later, when asked if he would go into private practice to defend the same type of people he once prosecuted, he quipped: ?Can you see me as a defense attorney??

Fitzgerald arrived in Chicago from New York City, where he made his name in successful prosecutions involving the 1998 terrorist bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. On Thursday he said of that time, ?Most people didn?t [know] who Al Qaeda was,? but those convictions started the process of dismantling the terrorist groups.

?Obviously, there?s still a dangerous threat out there, but it?s remarkable we avoided anything close to the scale of the 9/11 attack in the 10 years since,? he said.

Once in Chicago, Fitzgerald pursued the successful convictions of two successive Illinois governors: George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich. Mr. Ryan was charged with racketeering and fraud that went back to his days as secretary of State. Mr. Blagojevich was accused of trying to sell Barack Obama?s seat in the US Senate after he won the presidential election.

Each of the high-profile corruption trials was handled with particular tenacity. For example, Blagojevich was tried a second time after the first trial resulted in a hung jury.

When Fitzgerald had announced the charges against Blagojevich, he told reporters that Blagojevich?s actions were so egregious, they would make none other than Abraham Lincoln ?roll over his grave.? Those words were later used by Blagojevich?s defense team as evidence that Fitzgerald operated with a special vendetta against the governor.

On Thursday, Fitzgerald admitted regrets over the inflamed comments and said that they ?seemed like a good idea at the time.?

Besides the two governors, Fitzgerald won convictions for a long list of Chicago organized-crime leaders, city workers and contractors, local officials, and top aides to former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, with whom he had a chilly relationship.

Because of Fitzgerald?s success rate in Chicago, he was tapped in 2005 as special prosecutor in cases involving I. Lewis ?Scooter? Libby, former Vice President Dick Cheney?s adviser, who became the highest-ranking White House official since the Iran-contra case to receive a conviction.

Private supply ship flies by space station in test

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) ? The world's first private supply ship flew tantalizingly close to the International Space Station on Thursday, acing a critical test in advance of the actual docking.

The unmanned SpaceX Dragon capsule flew within 1? miles of the orbiting lab as it performed a practice lap and checkout of its communication and navigation systems.

Officials at NASA and the SpaceX company declared the rendezvous a success and said the historic linkup is on track for Friday.

It is the first U.S. vessel to visit the space station since NASA's shuttles retired last summer ? and the first private spacecraft to ever attempt a delivery. The Dragon is carrying 1,000 pounds of provisions.

Thursday's accomplishment "is a big confidence boost. Everyone's very excited," said SpaceX mission director John Couluris. After working all night and into the wee hours, he urged his team to go home and rest up for Friday. "It's exciting to be an American and part of putting American spacecraft into orbit, and we're very proud right now."

NASA flight director Holly Ridings said the mood is upbeat on her side as well, but noted "there's still a lot of really new things that the teams need to perform and the vehicles, frankly, need to perform" on Friday.

"This is still definitely a demonstration flight," she said at a news briefing.

As the pre-dawn hours of Thursday unfolded, the space station astronauts struggled with bad computer monitors and camera trouble as the Dragon zoomed toward them, but the problem did not hold up the operation. Indeed, all of the tests appeared to go well.

The astronauts successfully turned on Dragon's strobe light by remote control, but could not see it because of the sun glare and distance of several miles. The Dragon finally popped into camera view about 10 minutes later, appearing as a bright speck of light against the blackness of space, near the Earth's blue horizon. The two solar wings were clearly visible as the Dragon drew closer.

"Can nicely see the vehicle," Dutch spaceman Andre Kuipers said.

SpaceX's near-term objective is to help stockpile the space station, joining Russia, Europe and Japan in resupply duties. In three or four more years, however, the company run by the billionaire who co-founded PayPal, Elon Musk, hopes to be launching station astronauts.

It is the cornerstone of President Barack Obama's strategy for NASA: turning over orbital flights to private business so the space agency can concentrate on destinations farther afield, like asteroids and Mars. Several U.S. companies are vying for the opportunity.

Obama called Musk on Wednesday, a day after Dragon's flawless launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard the company's Falcon 9 rocket.

"The President just called to say congrats. Caller ID was blocked, so at first I thought it was a telemarketer," Musk said via Twitter early Thursday. He ended his tweet with a smiley emoticon.

Musk monitored Thursday's operation from the SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, California, where the company is based.

On Friday morning, two of the space station's six astronauts, Kuipers and Donald Pettit, will use the space station's robot arm to grab the Dragon and attach it to the complex. The crew will have just under a week to unload the contents before releasing the spacecraft for re-entry next Thursday. It is the only supply ship designed to return to Earth with experiments and equipment; the others burn up in the atmosphere.

SpaceX wants to provide regular service at much faster flight rates than the government-sponsored cargo ships, Couluris said. Two more supply trips are planned by year's end.

The space shuttles used to be the primary means of getting things to and from the space station. Shuttle Discovery is now a museum relic, with Endeavour and Atlantis soon to follow.

Aboard the bell-shaped Dragon is food, clothes, batteries and other space station gear.

The space station and Dragon may be visible to Earthlings in select locations in the pre-dawn hours Friday, while flying tandem just prior to their linkup 250 miles (400 kilometers) above the planet. Among the many U.S. cities with viewing opportunities if skies are clear: New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago and Jacksonville, Florida.

5 ways to master the art of business networking | Africa Report

The key to successful networking is being able to interact with people. Here?s how to walk the walk and talk to the people that matter.

By Craig Falck for Africa Report

1. The number one rule of networking is to be seen.
It doesn?t matter what the event is, make sure that your name is on the invite list and attend. This is the only way to meet people and make contacts within the industry.
2. Mingle as if you?re single.
If you?re going to sit at the bar in the corner, you might as well not be there. You need to talk to other people at events and tell them your name, your business and what it is that you do. First impressions last, so make sure that you give them something they won?t soon forget.
3. Know what you?re talking about.
When it comes to any particular industry, there are a lot of specialists who know a lot about the products and services on offer. Have your facts on hand about your business and goods and give them something to talk about when you explain what sets you apart from the rest.
4. Listen and you will be listened to.
When you?re mingling, listen to what people have to say. This will give you insight into who they are, what they like and where their interests lie. Then, use this to your advantage and bring up a topic that gives you common ground. This will break any ice and help make friends in the biz.
5. Always have business cards on hand.
Not only could you win cool prizes when you enter at the door (most events have lucky draws), but you?ll also be able to hand them out while you?re busy networking. The people you meet now have a way of contacting you, as well as a reminder ? they?ll remember you when they empty their pockets at the office the next morning.

Right at 'Home': Phillips is new 'Idol'

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Finalists Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez on the season finale.

?American Idol? voters sure love guys with guitars.?Phillip Phillips continued the dominance of the guys on the show, winning the season 11 title and the million-dollar recording contract that goes with it. The normally laid-back singer was overwhelmed when host Ryan Seacrest announced the results, breaking down midway through his performance of ?Home? and leaving the stage to hug his parents.

It was a rare misstep for the former pawn shop worker from Georgia, who was never announced as one of the lowest vote-getters at any point. Though his voice lacked the power and range of some of the other finalists and he battled health problems throughout the season, he was the most contemporary of the contenders and should have a big seller with that first single.

Jessica Sanchez finished second, continuing an ?Idol? trend. No woman has won the show since Jordin Sparks in season six, and if the folks behind the show want to change that next year, they should probably avoid selecting the same types of singers to compete each season.

The two-hour, seven-minute finale took its time getting to that final envelope, with the decision made by a record 132 million votes. The show used some of those 127 minutes to make fun of the judges (though it largely spared the contestants, except for one early audition montage), and there were the usual live performances featuring selected contestants sharing the stage with music legends.

Phillip sang with John Fogerty, breaking out the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits ?Have You Ever Seen the Rain?? and ?Bad Moon Rising.? If the post-"Idol" career doesn?t go as expected for the new champ, he?s got a future in a CCR or Dave Matthews cover band for sure.

Jessica, meanwhile, got original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holliday for ?I Am Telling You I?m Not Going.? It was one of the best performances of the season, though sadly for Jessica it came after the votes were already counted.

In addition, Joshua Ledet sang with ?the biggest inspiration of my life,? season three champion Fantasia Barrino, a duet that likely shattered glass throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Skylar Laine got Reba McEntire as her partner, and Hollie Cavanagh sang with Jordin Sparks. ?

For the group numbers, Chaka Khan came onstage with the women, while the legendary Neil Diamond joined the men and thrilled Red Sox fans everywhere by performing ?Sweet Caroline.?

And that?s not all! Viewers saw the first ?Idol? proposal in history, as Diana DeGarmo (season three finalist) said yes to Ace Young (season five seventh-place finisher). There was also a Bee Gees tribute from the ?Idol? guys, and Rihanna performed without a wardrobe malfunction or lyrics that caused the Fox censors to faint with worry. Jane Lynch was also spotted rocking out in the stands to the Chaka Khan set. Maybe there?s a ?Glee? guest appearance in her future.

Other notable moments in the finale:

  • Ford did wind up giving Phillip a car despite his bailing on most of the promotional videos. Also getting new wheels were Jessica, Phillip?s brother-in-law and Jessica?s family friend/music mentor. However, Ford did not pull an Oprah and give everyone in the audience a car.
  • The ?Idol? finalists showed that you can sing the phone book, as Randy Jackson always says, but it?s not exactly something that cries out for an iTunes download.
  • ?Idol? showed that it can indeed survive without J.Lo as a judge, as she was absent for a good portion of the broadcast to get ready for her two-song set.
  • Steven Tyler also took the stage along with Aerosmith for two tunes. Apparently, Randy, who was the only judge not to perform, doesn't have much pull with his former bandmates. Those Journey days must seem like they happened a very long time ago. Oh, wait. They did.

Tami Tapping To Release Fear of Presentations ? First Session ...

Tami (not her actual name) came to see me for stage fright and meeting anxiety. She is a music student working piece-time as a waitress, and whenever she played in forehead of her teacher or a group, she trembled like a blade. She needed to release this fear in method to move on with her studies and her work.

I explained to Tami around EFT. She seemed extremely nervous when I explained how our fears are stored in the material substance rather than a place in the brain. I tried to interpret about energy and how by changing the body?s force, we feel better. However, she was way too nervous to sit from one side the explanation. So I explained the absolute minimum and left the rest of the interpretation for the treatment.

I started the treatment by having Tami lie from the top to the bottom of whilst I tapped on her. I did so by sitting behind her seat of the brain and tapping on the Top of the Head and all the Eye points, tapping all the way in a even motion from one point to the next. This election of points is because it is easy for me to do without compromising my position, it is very nice and unobtrusive for the client, and it is adequate points for treatment.

In the first session, I chose to shrink with explaining EFT as I tapped on Tami. One time that was finished, she was so relaxed, she was almost sleeping. We then went on to treat the first occurrence that came to her mind. That was the meeting that she had with her new boss two months ago. I abroach on Tami, guessing most aspects and using the intelligence I managed to get from her during history-pleasing. I said statements such as the following.

?Smooth though you were trembling,?? ?Smooth though there was this fear of existence judged,?? ?Even though he was in a station of authority,?? (I also introduced the statue of the boss on the toilet with his trousers round his ankles, and Tami giggled. I said as I kept tapping ?he is equitable a human being, just like you and me. He goes to the dressing-table and looks very undignified too, just like everyone other?.

The intensity of fear about the interview went from an 8 out of 10 to a 4 to a 2, and at that time less, but by then Tami had released so abundant fear, she was too tired to talk. I guess it was naught or thereabouts.

I finished by giving Tami the Active Anxiety Stopper to do without wording preceding performances, and she left looking very relaxed. I direct the eye forward to our next session. Thank you Tami for letting me number your story, so that others can perceive the strength to come forward for healing. Witness says he saw Clemens at Canseco pool party

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Star-struck at 11 when he saw pitching great Roger Clemens, a 25-year-old man became a witness for prosecutors seeking to convict the former baseball player of lying to Congress.

At issue was a 1998 gathering at player Jose Canseco's house that Clemens denied attending ? one of the false statements prosecutors allege Clemens made in his 2008 congressional deposition.

On Monday, Alexander Lowrey testified that he saw Clemens at the party. Prosecutors showed several photos of the former pitcher in attendance, including one of the 11-year-old Lowrey on the deck of the pool, next to a smiling Clemens standing in the shallow end of the water. The former pitcher's hair is bleach-blond, which is how Lowrey said he recalled it.

Lowrey said he had been invited to the party in south Florida by a handyman who worked for his family's business as well as Canseco. At the time, Clemens and Canseco were teammates with the Toronto Blue Jays. Lowrey said he played baseball back then and looked up to Clemens as "one of the best pitchers in the game."

Clemens' lawyer tried to play with the potentially faulty memory Lowrey might have of a party that happened more than a dozen years ago. Lowrey couldn't remember some details and said he had to estimate the times he arrived and left, but he said he had a clear memory of meeting Clemens and Canseco.

Brian McNamee, Clemens' longtime strength and conditioning coach, has said he saw Clemens and Canseco talking to a mysterious third person at the pool party, a person McNamee said he felt had a connection to steroids. McNamee said he first injected Clemens with steroids a few days later and continued to do so in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Clemens' denial at a 2008 House hearing and deposition of taking performance-enhancing drugs led to his indictment for lying to Congress.

Clemens, in his congressional deposition in February 2008, said, "I never was at the party." Later in the deposition, he said: "I wasn't here at this ? at a party that he had. I could have gone by there after a golf outing. So ? but I was not at this party."

Prosecutors tried to hammer the point by showing a video of Clemens testifying before Congress a few days later, where he says he might have dropped off at the party his wife or a relative who had golfed with him.

"But at the time of the day that I would have expressed it to be, I was on my way to the ballpark," he insisted. "I would have had to have gotten to the ballpark extremely early. I know one thing. I wasn't there having huddled up with somebody trying to do a drug deal. I know that for sure."

Over at the defense table, Clemens nodded ? as if in agreement with his previous statement.

McNamee, the only person to claim firsthand knowledge of Clemens using steroids and human growth hormone, finally got to name names in front of the jury: Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch and Mike Stanton.

Before Monday's session, he had not been allowed to say that he provided former Clemens teammates Pettitte and Knoblauch with human growth hormone, or that he helped ex-Clemens teammate Stanton obtain HGH from drug dealer Kirk Radomski. The judge had ruled that such information could prejudice the jury against Clemens.

But Hardin's grueling cross-examination tipped the balance in the other direction, prosecutors argued. Hardin suggested before the jury last week that McNamee had solely or primarily targeted Clemens, and that no one had been charged in connection with McNamee's accusations, raising the issue of McNamee's credibility.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton therefore ruled that McNamee could name Knoblauch and Stanton as receiving HGH in 2001 when they were with the New York Yankees, and Pettitte in 2002 when he was with the Yankees. The judge instructed the jury that the names could only be used to help establish McNamee's "credibility as a witness" and cannot be used to "infer Mr. Clemens' guilt."

On Tuesday, prosecutors sought to add additional information from McNamee. In a motion, they asked Walton to allow the admission of three statements McNamee made from 2001 to 2005 in which the strength coach told people he saved needles used to inject Clemens; had saved "darts" from players he had injected to placate his wife; and that Clemens had used HGH. Prosecutors say the statements should be allowed to rebut defense claims that McNamee fabricated allegations and evidence to avoid prosecution or gain fame and fortune.

McNamee's integrity and credibility were attacked relentlessly last week by Clemens' lawyer, and the government embarked on a rehabilitation job with its key witness during follow-up questioning Monday. McNamee also apologized for the medical condition that caused him to take frequent breaks. He came across as a sympathetic figure in the final moments of some 26 hours on the stand, a small counterweight to three days of brutal cross-examination.

With McNamee finished after five-plus days on the stand, prosecutors called a Miller-Coors manager to testify about the beer can McNamee says he used to store waste after an alleged steroids injection of Clemens in August 2001. The witness, Anthony Manuele, looking at markings on the bottom of the can, was able to confirm that it would have been on shelves between August 2001 and Nov. 15, 2001 ? coinciding with McNamee's timeframe.

Hardin, on cross-examination, needled prosecutors by asking Manuele, "You don't sell these beer cans to keep needles, do you?"

The judge sustained a government objection, but not before Manuele could answer, "No, sir."

Lawyers indicated to the judge that the government might wrap up its case this week, even though Tuesday will be a day off because of a conflict with Walton's schedule. Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin then said he would need seven or eight days to present the defense's case. Both sides are working to finish before June 8, when further conflicts with Walton's schedule could cause the trial to go on recess for a month.
