WASHINGTON (AP) ? The students in the Saturday morning class trickle in and, as they introduce themselves around a table, reveal far more intimate biographies than just name and hometown.

One confesses to demons he struggles to control. Another says he's here to find a community. "Forgive me," an Iraq war veteran begins haltingly. "I have to use notes. I have a brain injury."

The students are participants in a veterans writing seminar at George Washington University, where for two days they immerse themselves in the basics of the craft and learn how to plumb for therapeutic and creative purposes their experiences in places like Iraq, Bosnia and Vietnam. The class is a non-credit weekend seminar open to veterans and their relatives, but the university plans to soon adapt the model into a for-credit semester-long course for student veterans.

The seminar is part of a trend of veterans-only courses offered at colleges and universities, part of a concerted effort to cater to a population that tends to be older, more experienced and farther removed from the classroom than traditional undergraduates.

Introductory courses on campus life help veterans navigate the unfamiliar terrain of a college environment while academic classes set aside for veterans are designed to help them learn in smaller settings and alongside peers with similar backgrounds. The courses are often peppered with military references and sometimes taught by fellow veterans.

"Different institutions are using veterans-specific courses for a variety of reasons, but largely it has to do with ensuring that veterans have a smooth and comfortable transition from the military culture into the civilian culture," said Meg Mitcham, director of veterans programs at the American Council on Education, a higher education association.

Still, not all courses have had staying power. It's not simple to find courses that appeal broadly to veterans of different ages and generations, not all veterans seek to identify themselves as such, and there's not universal agreement that veteran-oriented classes are the best way to acclimate a group that may already feel isolated.

Michael Dakduk, executive director of Student Veterans of America, said that while there are obvious benefits to the model, he's also heard some say: "Does it necessarily help with re-reintegration, and specially integration into a college campus, if they're being removed from the student population?"

The courses are but one example of services that colleges are offering to a surge of veterans who have enrolled after the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, which expanded tuition benefits. An ACE survey found that 62 percent of the 690 colleges and universities that responded provide programs and services, including post-traumatic-stress counseling and specially trained staff. The Department of Veterans Affairs says 441,710 veterans and eligible beneficiaries are enrolled this fall in educational programs using Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits.

That focus may only intensify now that the Iraq war has ended and the war in Afghanistan is winding down, with new veterans seeking education.

Specialized courses enable brick-and-mortar institutions to maintain a toehold in the veterans' education market at a time of increased competition, including from for-profit career colleges and technical programs that critics say use deceptive marketing to target military families.

"Just like the rest of the country, people in the academy over the decade-long conflicts have come to recognize that we have this tremendously small number of people who are bearing this burden for society," said Derek Malone-France, executive director of GW's Writing Program. "There's this real opportunity to collaborate between the academy and military, which is historically a very fraught divide."

"They're back now, and they need it," Malone-France said. "They need to feel that they have a mission. Collectively, they are saying among themselves, 'What we can we do? How can we mobilize?

The courses acknowledge veterans' unique academic and social needs: Incoming freshmen who have seen combat may be less keen on dormitory scavenger hunts than the average 18-year-old undergraduate, but having been away from class for longer, they're also more likely to benefit from advice on balancing their coursework with professional, family and financial responsibilities and adjusting from the regimented military to the freedoms of college life.

"Having faced some life-threatening situations in the military, I was actually more fearful of the choices that I had when I entered college. I didn't have someone basically saying, 'Here is your exact daily schedule' or 'Here is your objective,'" said Michael Samano, a Navy veteran who has taught veteran-centered courses at Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore.

West Virginia University, which has about 900 students using VA benefits, offers veterans courses in history, public speaking and on transitioning from military to student life. Cleveland State University offers a veterans-only section of Introduction to University Life, a required freshman class. Collin College in Texas has provided various veteran-friendly classes, including a history class that teaches students how to do an oral history project and that is open to general education students too.

A University of Iowa class, limited to veterans and service members who have previously deployed, requires students to interview service members from a different era and covers everything from college study skills and reading comprehension to drug addiction and healthy sleep habits.

"You have the ability to speak your mind about things that normal people aren't really going to understand. They may see a movie or something, but there's no substitute for being there," said Gene Rovang, a 46-year-old veteran enrolled in the Iowa class. "As a veteran, when you talk about your experiences, it's just very easy to communicate to a roomful of veterans compared to a roomful of civilians. Most people don't have a job where your job is to kill people."

At Wright State University in Ohio, a psychology class frames discussions of behavior and leadership around the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal and Guantanamo Bay, said Larry James, a retired Army colonel who teaches it.

"I can talk their language," said James, the former psychology department chair at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. "Many of them, the posts and bases they've served on in Iraq and/or Afghanistan, I've been there too."

Still, the results have been uneven. Some classes, failing to generate enough interest from veterans, are no longer offered. Some have been opened to civilian students.

The University of Michigan-Flint ran veterans courses on philosophy and the natural sciences in 2009 and 2010, but stopped offering them in part because they weren't drawing enough students. Stevens Wandmacher, a Navy veteran who taught a veterans' course in philosophy, said his students ? who ranged from combat veterans to those who served stateside ? didn't all have the same needs or experiences that could be satisfied through a single course.

"I think there are better ways of meeting the needs of the student-veterans and getting them into the life of the university on a large scale," Wandmacher said. "That was some of the criticism when this was set up: 'Why are you isolating them and keeping them away from everybody else?' To some degree, I think there was a little bit of merit in that criticism."

The GW writing seminar is taught by Ron Capps, a professional writer and 25-year veteran who says he turned to writing to deal with personal trauma. The seminar, taught to roughly 15 veterans from different wars and generations, is a two-day cram session on writing basics framed around famous war and military literature.

The importance of scene setting and vivid detail is illustrated with an excerpt from "A Farewell to Arms" in which Ernest Hemingway describes a protagonist's leather boots "shiny with oil" and Austrian sniper rifle with the "blued octagon barrel." Capps uses James Bond movies to illustrate character archetypes. A clip from the war movie "The Thin Red Line" gets the class talking about capturing the anxiety of combat. He reminds them that they're part of a proud legacy of veterans to nurture literary ambitions.

Details matter, Capps tells the class, but don't suffocate the reader with military lingo and acronyms. Students who need psychological help should go get it, he advises matter-of-factly, and not expect it to come from writing alone.

"We're not therapists. We're not medical people at all," he explained in an interview before the class. "We're writers. Writers and others have known the healing power of arts."

This story is the latest installment in a joint initiative by The Associated Press and Associated Press Media Editors taking a closer look at this latest generation of war veterans as they return to civilian life, and the effect this is having on them, their families and American society.

Baseball-Tigers face Giants' Vogelsong in critical Series game

DETROIT, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Detroit's perceived advantage in pitching evaporated during the first two games of the World Series and now the Tigers find themselves facing the San Francisco Giants' hottest starter in Game Three on Saturday.

The Tigers entered the Fall Classic well-rested and were able to throw their best pitchers at the Giants early in the series and allow for a second start if the series goes long.

However, the Giants pounced on Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the opener and outlasted Doug Fister in Game Two and can take a nearly invincible 3-0 series lead with a win on Saturday.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland was philosophical about his team's chances to stop the bleeding.

"Well, I like to simplify things," he said. "I can simplify this one pretty easy. The way I look at it, we're two games back with five to play. But we're playing the team we need to catch.

"I think that's the best way to approach it."

The Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games in the National League Championship Series and had only one day of rest before the World Series began in San Francisco. Detroit, meanwhile, swept the New York Yankees in four straight in the ALCS and had a week to rest up.

The pitching rotation did not exactly work out for the Tigers, and it could get worse because in Game Three they will face Ryan Vogelsong, who is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three postseason starts.

With the series having shifted to Detroit for Game Three, Vogelsong, 35, did not think the frigid weather forecast for Comerica Park on Saturday would be much of an issue.

"The cold weather, obviously it's something we're going to have to deal with," he said. "But it's the World Series. You can't be worried about how cold it is.

"I threw a game in Chicago last year where it was 34 degrees (one degree Centigrade) and it was raining and sleeting, and I threw the ball pretty well that night.

"If I am thinking about how cold it is, it means I'm not thinking about what I'm doing on the mound."

SILENT BATS

The potent Detroit offense has just 10 hits during the opening two games of the series and Tigers catcher Alex Avila noted that the Giants' pitchers "haven't made many mistakes."

"Hitters hit mistakes, that's the bottom line," he said. "When you have opportunities with the guys on base, you've got to be able to take advantage of them. To this point in two games we haven't. That's really it. There's nothing more to it.

"There's no magical scheme that you can just flick a switch or change something, and all of a sudden you score nine runs."

Detroit will start right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who was 9-13 with a 3.86 earned run average this season having split his time between the Miami Marlins and Tigers, but in the playoffs is 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA.

"We need to forget what happened in San Francisco," he said. "I know we've got the talent. That's why we're here. We've got a pretty good team, so we're going to fight it to the end.

New study recommends New Orleans court merger; chief Traffic ...

Another voice has joined a growing chorus seeking to consolidate court operations in?New Orleans, in this case by merging Traffic Court into Municipal Court. A city-commissioned report released Friday argues?for streamlining?the city's balkanized?court system in part through the proposed merger.

The report by?The PFM Group, based in Philadelphia,?is the bookend to a report released two weeks ago, commissioned by Chief Administrative Officer Andy Kopplin, that found "highly fragmented" and low-tech coordination among public safety agencies in the city.

That finding was no surprise to anyone familiar with the criminal justice system in New Orleans, which is split in more pieces?than in any parish in the state. It's also severely antiquated, the first?report found, with paper record-keeping, hard-copy calendars, handwritten summonses and other pre-tech systems.

The follow-up report notes that New Orleans, with separate municipal, traffic and city courts, has more separate?judicial systems than any parish in Louisiana. It says a total staff of more than 450 employees could be reduced by 25 percent through a merger and other measures.

The study ranks Traffic Court as the most bloated, with more than 21 full-time positions for each of the four judges, compared with 20.5 in Criminal District Court and about a dozen for each judge in Juvenile and Municipal courts.

Despite relying on fines and fees for itself, and to funnel into city coffers and other state-mandated?programs such as public defense, Traffic Court has no formal program?to collect fines, the report found.

The report's top recommendation is to create a single Municipal Court "that hears misdemeanors, ordinance violations and traffic cases." It encourages city officials to seek state legislation to eliminate Traffic Court.

A?merger of Traffic and Municipal courts appears to be gaining a head of political steam, even from within. Robert Jones, the chief administrative judge at Traffic Court, said late Friday that he's open to the move.

"I do agree that from the standpoint of economies of scale, the merger of those two courts would save money and make sense from a financial standpoint," Jones said. "It's just in line with the other parishes in the state. Misdemeanor and traffic court matters are adjudicated in the same courthouse by the same judges."

Jones said the study misstates personnel figures for Traffic Court; the number of Traffic Court employees is not the 86 positions that the study counts, but 71, he said. The court, he said, has been trying to streamline.

Still, he said a merger would make sense, in part because both courts need to bring their case management systems into the 21st century and could do it together. "It can't be done overnight. It needs to be thought out. There are logistical nightmares that await," Jones said. "There would be positions that would have to be eliminated. I would be willing to sit down and discuss it."

Jones said he's "gotten word from City Hall that this is something that they would like to see accomplished."

Ryan Berni, a spokesman for Mayor Mitch Landrieu's office, said the study?should help?spur?reforms across the criminal justice system.? "It's fair to say the PFM report represents a good point of departure for some very serious conversations that need to held by all partners in the criminal justice system so that it improves its efficiency and coordination and keeps the people of New Orleans safe," he said in an e-mail. "The status quo has not been effective nor financially sustainable, so changes must occur."

The elimination of judges, as opposed to court staff through a merger, could prove more challenging; it may require statewide legislation that could jeopardize judgeships elsewhere in the state. "That's a matter that's being debated and discussed and analyzed by the (Supreme Court) judicial council. I'm going to defer to them," Jones said.

The study released Friday also recommends eliminating magistrate commissioner positions in Criminal District Court, or leaving them unfilled, citing the recent shift of thousands of misdemeanor cases to Municipal Court.

There appears to be?far?less?political momentum behind that move.

New Orleans Traffic Court has come under intensive fire over the last year. In a scathing report last year, Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux's office cited the court for stealing money from the city and other agencies, misstating its revenue, paying full-time salaries and benefits to part-time judges and employees, and letting a contract accountant charge more than $600,000 in 2010 while also serving as the campaign treasurer for a sitting judge.

A Times-Picayune report found that the court's contract accountant, Vandale Thomas, pocketed more than $1.2 million in less than three years from checks written by Jones and the three other Traffic Court judges.

Quatrevaux's?report also said that four traffic court judges were far too many, given the paltry number of trials that take place there. Quatrevaux's office figured on a $2.5 million savings by merging Traffic Court into Municipal Court.

Jones also said Quatrevaux's office is in the process of re-auditing the court. "Traffic Court is ready to be reviewed," Jones said. "We think the measures we've taken and implemented have been responsive to his report outlining our deficits."

The merger talk comes with some dubious political precedent. A post-Katrina plan to combine the Orleans Parish civil, criminal and juvenile courts,?as well as the two elected clerks that manage case files, found footing in 2006 legislation but has since been scrapped.

Jones said a merger of Traffic and Municipal courts may come easier, since they both occupy the same building.

Among other points, the new study recommended:

? Creating a single office of judicial administration to manage all of the courts.

? Better organization and cataloging of evidence at Tulane and Broad.

? A detailed study of court security services provided by Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office, which received $2.5 million last year for criminal court services and security at Traffic and Municipal courts.

? New strategies to reduce case processing times.

? Expanding diversion programs to include both lower-level and more serious offenders.

The first part of the study noted a sprawling criminal justice system in the city that employs 3,200 people in agencies that are entirely self-contained, rarely share their data and keep tight control over their own budgets.

The city spent $181.3 million in 2010 on criminal justice, 71 percent of which went to the NOPD alone.

The overall criminal justice budget in the city stands at about $300 million a year, the study found, including local, state and federal revenue along with grants and fines and fees from criminal defendants and traffic scofflaws.

The city spent $90,000 on the two reports.

Family physicians need to know what to expect when they are asked to become the medical home for a young adult who is transitioning from pediatric care to adult care. However, effectively managing that transition and ensuring a positive patient experience can be challenging for all participants.

She helped write portions of a report titled Supporting the Health Care Transition From Adolescent to Adulthood in the Medical Home (21-page PDF; About PDFs) that was published in the July 2011 Pediatrics.

That guideline, a collaborative effort of the AAFP, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the America College of Physicians, provides detailed guidance on how to plan and execute optimal health care transitions for young patients.
