Overeating may double risk of memory loss

ScienceDaily (Feb. 13, 2012) ? New research suggests that consuming between 2,100 and 6,000 calories per day may double the risk of memory loss, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), among people age 70 and older. The study was just released and will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 64th Annual Meeting in New Orleans April 21 to April 28, 2012. MCI is the stage between normal memory loss that comes with aging and early Alzheimer's disease.

"We observed a dose-response pattern which simply means; the higher the amount of calories consumed each day, the higher the risk of MCI," said study author Yonas E. Geda, MD, MSc, with the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study involved 1,233 people between the ages of 70 and 89 and free of dementia residing in Olmsted County, Minn. Of those, 163 had MCI. Participants reported the amount of calories they ate or drank in a food questionnaire and were divided into three equal groups based on their daily caloric consumption. One-third of the participants consumed between 600 and 1,526 calories per day, one-third between 1,526 and 2,143 and one-third consumed between 2,143 and 6,000 calories per day.

The odds of having MCI more than doubled for those in the highest calorie-consuming group compared to those in the lowest calorie-consuming group. The results were the same after adjusting for history of stroke, diabetes, amount of education, and other factors that can affect risk of memory loss. There was no significant difference in risk for the middle group.

"Cutting calories and eating foods that make up a healthy diet may be a simpler way to prevent memory loss as we age," said Geda.

The co-authors of the study include Ronald C. Petersen, MD, Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and other investigators of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging in Rochester, Minn.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Robert H. and Clarice Smith and Abigail van Buren Alzheimer's Disease Research Program.

2) ?In late July and August of 2009, Congress passed the infamous "Cash for Clunkers" Program. ?What this did was remove and destroy 750,000 inexpensive used vehicles from the market, specifically older and large SUVs. ?This completely wiped out the low-end used car market and is why NO ONE has $5k cars...most were destroyed.?

3) ?The used car market and auctions have historically been fueled by off-rental vehicles which are sold quarterly by Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, etc. ?When the market crashed in 2008, these companies STOPPED ordering vehicles from the factories to replace their fleets. ?The rental companies have been holding on to their vehicles and instead of turning them over at 20k miles, many are keeping them until they have 60k miles. ?(Just check the odometer the next time you rent a car and you will see what I mean!) ?They have only started to re-order replace vehicles in the past few months. ?So, fewer off-rental vehicles at auction means fewer used cars available to consumers and those that are sold have very high miles......?

Finally, as the economy has started to improve and people want to trade their old vehicles, instead of new they are looking for a value in a later model used vehicle. ?Many times we have to recommend buying new, because the difference between a later model used car and a brand new one, is usually only a couple thousand dollars! ?Regardless, this trend of buying later model used vehicles instead of new has further inflamed the used car market!?

I know an alternative path to finding love after divorce. Do you want to hear it? It?s pretty out there and some of you are going to balk at it and might even disagree and unsubscribe. So, unless you can keep an open mind, you might want to click away now.

You?re still here? ?Thank you for you for being brave enough to hear me out! ?Bi-Coastal.? Think about it for a second. Today, so many relationships take place in separate cities for all kinds of reasons, whether it?s the economy, the military or a job. The best reason is because you have two families that live in two cities and because of the ages of the children can?t be blended into one, and it?s just in everyone?s best interest to keep it all separate.

The Proof is in The Pudding

I have three case studies to present, each couple is on their third marriage and they all have one thing in common.? They all live in separate states for at least 50% of the time.

• Couple Number 1 has been married for five years.? Two years in, papers were filed and a divorce seemed imminent, until one of the spouses moved.? They mended the relationship and it seems to work.? He splits his time about 70% in the state that she lives in and 30% in the state that he lives in, which is where is primary office and children are located.? Opposite of couple number one, he spend 70% of his time in the state where his job and children live and 30% of his time where his spouse and her children live.? His children and her children have never met and are not involved in each other?s lives or marriages.? She does not have a relationship with his children and he is very close to her children.? Although there has been some adjustment and rocky times, they have reached a routine that seems to be working for them, and they are thriving.
• Couple Number 3 has been married for almost 6 years.? She lives in one state with her children and he lives in another with his children.? On her off weekends, she flies to see him and on his off weekends, he flies to see her.? They take vacations together, when they both have custody or when neither has custody.? Both sets of children know their stepparents and have good relationships with them. They spend time together with and without all kids, some kids and no kids. Each maintains both lives together and separately. Although her job and her children are keeping her in a separate city, she is trying to find a way to move to be in the same city as him, as he is unable to move, but in the meantime, they are very happy with the arrangement they have and are thriving.

I?m by no means saying that you have to live in other cities to make it work, but what I am saying is that when you have been there done that before, you should leave yourself open to all possibilities and take yourself outside of your comfort zone.
